I am trying to get my sister in laws computer, where it will get knocked off line  if she gets a phone call. She has call waitting! I tried putting *70 in the dial up properites but that does not work . If I take it out that won't work either.
Is there a way and if so HOW!
Thanks in advance for any help!

I think you can only do that if you have a V92 Modem, and the drivers that support call waiting internet suspend and her ISP does also. My mother pays extra for a simular service but the ISP does the switching, but it requires a program running on her machine and it is Microsoft Windows only.

Actually it used to happen to me all the time before I learned how to use *70.  *70 disables call waiting and the person calling will just get a busy signal.  The problem may be in the modem initialization string.  Her ISP should be able to help her, if not:

What Brand/model of modem?  What Operating System?

Maybe we can workup a new initialization string.

This will do it - as long as she has call waiting & caller ID:

It allows you to answer an incoming call while on line - and disconnects  the internet connection if you choose to stay on the phone call.

Get a different line for your modum, never seen a device that will do what you want except on cable tv and I doubt they work.

I've seen the devices.  I think they sell them at Walmart, too.  I've never used one, so I don't know how well they work.  She shouldn't need a device or a second phoneline (although a 2nd line IS the best solution) if she wants the modem to kick her offline.

Still need to know the OS (what version of windows or whatever) and modem brand and model number in order to do the research necessary to answer the question.

Okay, I've found something to try.

The answer may be to lower or disable the Auto-Reliable feature in the modem using the hayes AT command set.

%An  -  "Auto-Reliable Fallback Character Selection"  -  This command selects the character to be used for auto-reliable fallback.  (n=any number from 1 to 127)

%A0  -  Disable auto-reliable fallback characters

%A1 through %A127  -  Selects an ASCII character for auto-reliable fallback

Make sure *70 is NOT in the dialing properties.

Try the following:

1. From the Start menu, select Settings, and then select Control Panel.

2. Double-click the Modems icon.

3. Select your modem.

4. Click the Properties button.

5. Select the Connection tab.

6. Click the Advanced button.

7. In the Extra Settings text box, type: at%A0 - (the number zero)  This will totally turn off the auto reliable feature of the modem.  Try this first to make sure this will even work.  This may cause her to get kicked offline more often due to line noise.  If the 0 works, but the getting kicked offline gets too bad, try replacing the 0 with a number from 1 to 127 until she still gets kicked off when another call comes in, but still not so often to be annoying.

8. In the Advanced Connection Settings window, click OK.

9. In your modem's properties window, click OK.

10. Click the Close button.

I hope this works.  If not, let me know and we'll try something else.

Gator

Edited to highlight the actual steps.
