Do you think that if you slap me again,
your feelings of inadequacy will subside?
One more punch and maybe you will be able to destroy
the things that you despise about yourself.
Am I the effigy of your frustration and resentment?
Do you feel better after battering me?
Then hit me again. Punch me. Scream at me. Curse me.
Leave me in a sobbing, retching, trembling ball.
I'll run to apologize. You are God.
I'll try to fix everything. It's my fault.
I love you.
I can't seem to make my nose stop bleeing though, and
I can't fix this terrible bruise under my eye.

Well, I'll tell you: After being battered, I would go back to her (or my father) and apologize, and when you're a kid, you think you deserve it, and that you're being punished for something you've done wrong. When you're a kid, your parents are infallible. They are God, or the closest thing to God that you've ever known. Saying "I love you," was a way to gain reassurance, to attempt to mend the relationship, and to regain some kind of security. (Even if you get punched or slapped for making the effort...)
