Happy New Year Renee. I don't know about the black eyed peas and cornbread, but it's warm in NY today and we are firing up the grill for screamin steaks and home fries and a big fat salad with garlic bread. In NY for it to be this warm - .............you should see the manic neighbors all out and about feelin frisky PF wishes***

Happy New Year Renee! My mother used to make us eat caviar every New Year...she said it was good luck and we'd get rich. By about 8 years old I remember running away screaming..."Please, please don't make me...I wanna be POOR!" Well...I got my wish.

'scuse my poor pitiful ignorant self - but what are black eyed peas? Do they taste like ordinary peas? Why do ya eat 'em if you don't like 'em? We have our dinner tomorrow - 13 of us in all. If I serve black eyed peas, will they all go home sooner? Best to all of you for 2005. Carol

I don't know what is wrong with BarbD's taster but I think black-eyed peas are wonderful. Add some jalapenos, ham hock, onions and cook until almost mushy...yum yum I don't just eat them at New Year's. Jiffy cornbread, cause it's sweet, is the best to go with! In the pic above, as mentioned, you are seeing ham hocks but on right side is the peas. yum yum edit to include recipe: 1 pound dried black-eyed peas 2 ham hocks, smoked 2 medium onions 1 (10oz) can diced tomatoes with chiles, juices reserved 1 jalapeno or serrano pepper, minced 2 teaspoons Creole seasoning 3/4 teaspoon ground cumin 3/4 teaspoon salt 3 scallions, sliced hot red pepper sauce Bring to a boil and then simmer for 2 to 2.5 hours until peas are tender. Sure will open up those closed cluster nostrils as well.

Hoppin' John...good eats. New Years day tradition in the South. Type in "Hoppin' John" and see. Black eye peas (for luck) over rice, cabbage (for money) and cornbread. Fry down left-over cabbage in an iron skillet the next day. Very good! Steve G Hope the Saints ate plenty of Black Eye Peas.
