I was checking out at Walmart and just trying to be pleasant, I asked the check-out lady if she was ready for Christmas. She said that she didn't celebrate Christmas. I guess I looked a little stunned, because she elaborated, "I'm a Jehovah's Witness." I said, "Oh..." and then finished up the rest of my transaction in uncomfortable silence. She asked me if I wanted a Jehovah's Witness tract/magazine, and I politely declined.

I agree...diversity rocks! I do have a sign on my front door, however, that says: PLEASE- NO DOOR TO DOOR RELIGION. THANK YOU AND HAVE A NICE DAY. I have no interest in being saved by anyone other than myself.

I wasn't offended, but... I don't know... If it were me and I didn't celebrate Christmas, here's how it would have gone: Customer: "So, you all ready for Christmas?" Me: (smile) "Yep!" No big deal. *shrug* Right on, Nani. I have a card on my door that says, "Please, no solicitors of ANY religion. Thank you."

I used to work retail at Christmas...a lot. And most of the time we were directly instructed to say "Happy holidays" so not to offend and NOT to be snippy about it cause it's bad for business. (Although you'd think that was obvious.) Happy New Year was good more generic one as well. I celebrate Chanukah and when customers would say to me "Have a Merry Christmas." I would reply with a big smile, "And you have a Very Happy Chanukah!" They'd usually return the smile or have a slightly confused look and something to think about for the rest of their shopping. (Maine is not that diverse)

I have always loved Christmas. During the years that I worked retail, I was completely fried by the 23rd or 24th. At that point is was sooo hard not to tell people " A Merry effen Christmas to you, azzhole!" Have you ever noticed how mean and imaptient customers can be? Now, I make it a point to let salespeople know how hard their job is and how much I appreciate their help.

LOL, Rori! Me too, Nani. I do my best to be patient and pleasant to sales people and waiters/waitresses, anyway. None of them have a very pleasant job. But I try to really go the extra mile during the holidays. No one deserves to have peoples' stress taken out on them. Rudeness is like a growing epidemic. I hear people order in restaurants and just demand whatever they want from the menu, without saying please, thank you, or anything! It's like somehow, the server is less of a person or something. Pretty disgusting... You can tell a lot about the character of a person by the way they treat others, regardless of the situation.

| That phrase was used many times in our local Target and Toys R Us. Not to the customers but to the Management. A lady that lives a couple houses up the street from us works as a cashier at Target. Pretty shitty job having to put up with rude customers for low pay. She told us they just got their Christmas bonus. All the cashiers got ................a sugar cookie! One lousy cookie!............ But she did say it had a nice bow on it. And she said the cashier supervisors got a "nicer" bonus. They got a $5 gift cerfificate to........... Target! The company gives with one hand and takes with the other. Last week I was at the local Toys R Us to pick up a bike. While waiting for the bike to be brought out I was talking to the guy that assembles them. He told me the store had hired a lot of part time help to get through the Christmas rush. Part time help = $7/hr and no benefits. But are the part timers really "helping to get through"? Nope........the part timers were working 40 to 50 hours a week and the regular, full time employees were having their hours cut. So much for Christmas spirit. Bah Humbug. Fuck Target and Toys R Us.

| That's precisely what allows our dopey self-serving government economists that measure inflation to come up with their fairy-tale numbers. I guess the bikes (ALL FROM CHINA) are cheaper every year... all this as Rome crumbles around the bikes. The continuing decline in the number of those insured is frightening and isn't reflected in the bullshit economy or inflation numbers. I hate it when honest working people are uninsured...

Insurance is not worth the price. AT one point I had a bill from Blue Cross and Blue shield....get this, they wanted me to pay $450 for one month of coverage.... Okay at the time I was earning $200 a month and had to choose, "food today" or Partial hospital coverage for someunseen future? Mom heard me gripe and paid that month's bill. But the very next month, they wanted me to fork over $575. And I simply laughed as I shredded the bill and thought, "Just how crazy do they really thnk I am?" went without coverage for 3 entire years, and guess what? No big accidents, no terrible trouble.... They convince us that we need it, just in case.... had I need it alright, like a damn hole in the head. Ugh Oh yeah. Happy merry Whattever!

Greetings from the midst of X -mas in retail! This is my 30th career Xmas in Retail (23rd with the current company) The good - Non-stop excitement and the opportunity to make many many new lasting customers Lots and lots of extra $$$ Best time of the year to be in retail! The bad: No OT for management Gotta hear the same 1 hour loop of xmas songs over and over and over again Everyone is in a hurry The part time seasonal help is often harder on the rest of us than if we ran severely short staffed. The ugly Who's that guy that i see sleeping when i crawl home and is still asleep when i leave for work before dawn? If i didn't get my holiday shopping done before Nov 1 - forget it - everyone gets gifts from my store! Firing all those nice kids the day after the rush (ok - i'll admit - some of them i gladly toss out and tell 'em not to let the door hit 'em ...) And the worst part - not being able to actually spend and time with loved ones. Anyway - Happy Happy Ho- Ho Ho to all of you - just a couple more hours of this and i can finally head home to a WHOLE DAY OFF! Sylvan

| Actually - no he's not - he works 2 jobs and does work 7 days a week - he just doesn't have to leave at 6 am and get home at midnight. The rest of the year - he's the one getting up first. He's actually the smart one! 9-5 job 5 days a week and a part time job on weekends & some nights. He also does all of the cooking and a lot of the house work and yard work - so i'm not complaining - just looking forward to actually getting to spend a little time with him once the rush is over! I did come home to a lovely steak and lobster dinner last night
