Oxygen Tank Question

My O2 supplier has quit carrying my small tank. They call it an "M-60" tank. It is about 2 1/2' tall, and 24" around. I love this tank. It is great to transport from vehicle to vehicle. I do not want to switch to a different supplier. What I want to know, has anyone ever tried to fill a small tank from their large one? I cannot find anything about this in the archives. I was thinking of rigging up a copper line between the two tanks, with the proper connectors on each end. I know I won't be able to fill the smaller tank fully, but if I could fill it enough to get four or five hits out of it, I would be happy. Has anyone else done this? Does it sound to be safe? Come on, family, you are my source of information! Spill your guts!!! Heehee ... Thanks Chuck

Yep....its called a pigs tail. not sure if you can buy one, I had mine custom made. I use it to transfer argon from a big bottle to a smaller one for on site work. But then again im working with welding tanks, not 02 tanks .......................................jonny Edit.....NOT MEDICAL 02 tanks

Im not sure if a copper line will hold 2600psi. I thought about that too. Even the steel brake lines in your buggy are not strong enough. I tried. Blew a slit in the 3/8 in. line. I just figured it granted copper wont hold. You might look at a "D" size tank from the welders shop. Its about 18 inches tall by 5 n 1/2 inches across. Its a one time purchase of around 75 bucks, but can be re-filled at any oxygen supply house. You just exchange your empty for another filled. I have been known to throw mine in a backpack and strap it to the motorcycle. Kinda heavy for backpacking, but sure is easy to have in a buggy. Easy transport.

To answer your question yes it can be done. We do it at the Ambulance service, and fire depts do it as well. It is called a cascade system. It can be dangerous though, and not recomended for some one not trained to do it. So if you know any fire fighters they may be able to rig up something for you and teach you how to do this. But let me say again it is dangerous and not recomended for someone not trained to do this.

Don't even consider any tubing. If you try anything make sure it's all threaded heavy pipe - brass or copper (some corrosion resistant alloy). You never know if the pressures will get higher than 2600PSI.
