Good news at last

I saw my coeliac consultant last week and I can FINALLY start reducing the steroids! I've ONLY been on them 11 months so I suppose I should be grateful! If all goes to plan I should be off them completely by mid January. One thing I have noticed so far is that I have been having really vivid dreams and hallucinations again - since reducing the dose. Has anyone else found this when they have been on steroids? I had the same symptoms when I first started on steroids and it was bizarre to say the least.. I had "bats crawling out of the smoke detector on the ceiling and turning into pink squirrels" then I had "nuns gliding through the room and leaving via the window".. floating through it not hitching up the old habits! .. all sorts of really weird events and its starting again. PLEASE someone tell me they have had the same thing happen and its not just that I have finally flipped!

I had the same thing when I was on a pred taper. Pink and blue pigs would circle over my bed and then turn into cuban born circus midgets and rape me. when I came to, I had a pain in the ass and a hand full of astro-glide

| And an overwhelming desire to wear a sun dress and visit Cuba.

That is good news Helen. The less 'roids, the better. The only time I had hallucinations was when I was given Atavan for panic attacks after my brain surgery. I was sure I brought lab monkeys from the hospital home with me and I kept thinking my husband was hiding a sword in his pants. And yes...he was glad to see me.

Yes, I had some really terrifying dreams while on Pred. Scared the crap out of me. So glad to hear you are going to be getting off "we hope" the steroids. Ruth

Very glad to hear you may be steroid free, soon. Hopefully your doc will taper you off nice and slow. Trying to taper too fast can cause major problems. Good Luck!!! Gator

I'm also feeling absolutely terrified for no reason. I'll be in my living room for instance and suddenly feel like I can't breathe, I feel like I have a great pressure builing up inside me and I need to scream or run - or both! I think these are panic attacks but I don't know as I have never had one before. I know they will all pass as the gloop goes out of my system but I thought I'd let you know 'cos then if anyone else is weaning themselves off steroids at any time they know what they have to look forward too!

| Yep- that's a panic attack. Breathe deeply through it and try a relaxing technique on your muscles. Sit in a soft chair and close your eyes. Now starting with your bottom, imagine each muscle in your body getting heavier and sinking further into the chair. Keep breathing deeply through this. Inhale through your nose deeply for a count to about 8, hold the breath for another 8, exhale slowly through your mouth for another 8. I have found this to be an effective, non medication way to work through them. If they get really troublsome, you can talk to your dr about anti-anxiety meds. They are what caused me to hallucinate, though. Given your recent emotional trauma, I don't know how much of it relates to the taper. Just another shitty thing to deal with... It's a good thing you're so damn strong, hun!

Helen - yup sounds like a panic attack! I had them bad last year around this time. Don't know why, never figured out why I got them, but the deep breathing works. I got my first one in the middle of the grocery store and ended up leaving a cart full of food and walking out. Horrible feeling but with everything you are going through right now it is not surprising. Scary stuff about the dreams - when I was little I used to spike very high fevers and have hallucinations that spiders, snakes and rats were coming out of the ceiling lights and dropping on me. Horrible. I hope it passes for you soon! I am here all damn day! Karen
