Happy Birthday, Finland! We've been independent since 1917. We declared our independence from Russia on this day, December 6. Those, who love their history, he're little info about Finland: 1155 The first missionaries arrive in Finland from Sweden. Finland becomes part of the Swedish realm. 1809 Sweden surrenders Finland to Russia. The Czar declares Finland an autonomous Grand Duchy with himself as constitutional monarch represented by a governor general. 1917 Finland declares independence from Russia on December 6. 1919 The constitution is adopted and Finland becomes a republic with a president as head of state. 1939 - 40 The Soviet Union attacks Finland and the Winter War is fought. 1941 - 44 Fighting between Finnish and Soviet forces resumes in the Continuation War. Some territory is ceded to the Soviet Union but Finland is never occupied and preserves its independence and sovereignty. 1955 Finland joins the United Nations and, in 1956, the Nordic Council. 1995 Finland becomes a member of the European Union (EU). 1999 Finland backs European monetary union. 2002 Banknotes and coins of the EU's single currency, the euro, enter circulation.

Happy Independence Day Finland! You forgot one important date in the history of Finland. 1980 when Jari Kurri joined the Edmonton Oilers and teamed up with Wayne Gretzky to form the greatest one two punch in NHL history. Remember the NHL?

Good for Finland. T Take heart that you aren't as cantankerous as those Norwegians that still aren't in the EU. Crazy bunch, they are Charlie

About the war.. "We gained 57,000 km˛ [22,000 square miles] of territory. Just enough to bury our dead." – a Soviet General Depending on sources Finns lost some 20 000 men and the russians 140 000 - 400 000. Try googling it, it's interesting stuff.

On our Independence Day, the celebrations are concentraded on recalling those brave soldiers who died or wounded during the wars. There was a special religious ceremony with all the church leaders present (around 80 per cent of us are evangelic-lutheran). There was a military parade, but nothing huge. My favourite part took place in the evening: the Idependence Day Ball, hosted by our President Tarja Halonen. There was 2000 quests, including war veterans, politicians, artists, athletes, businessmen. Lots of wonderful dresses! No fireworks, but lots of patriotic feeling. sandie99 p.s. Mac, I do recall NHL. Most of my fave ice hockey players play there now. I really wanted to add 1995 there: that was when Finland won it's first World Championship in ice hockey!
