Anyone wanna help with school?

I have a research paper that I am doing and I wondered if any of you would like to help out a bit.

For my E-Commerce class I am putting together a business recommendation for interactive online marketing as an alternative to standard banner ads and pop up ads.

What I would like from you is a list of the things you do and don't like about online marketing tactics.
Do pop up ads tend to drive you away from a company?
Do you ever click through on banner ads?
If a company has an interactive marketing program (like the dellf and the 3d prize box) are you more likely to return to their site even if you don't purchase something?
Have you experienced online marketing strategies that have caused you to go to a new company and stick with them?

I appreciate any input or answers I get as well as any feedback on online marketing outside of the questions I asked.

Thanks!

Popups - HATE them (even though they are now a non-issue)
Flashy ads - especially those that move the text of the page up and down by expanding and shrinking the ad - ANNOYING! Angry

My biggest pet-peeve about pop up ads is when you go to x out of one and the x is not an escape but a way into the ad.  Nothing pisses me off worse. Yes I am also turned off by those companies that interrupt my web surfing and researching with pop ups.  I will click onto ads that I am interested in and found that exciting when I first came online about 5 years ago. The recent attacks of browser hijackers, popups and spyware is turning me off to the internet all together.

I disable pop-ups, avoid any type of banner-clicking, and generally think online marketing tactics of any kind are quite simply AWEFULLLLLLLL!

I only purchase something online if I see an item in a printed catalog that I want to buy.  Or, if I am looking for a particular object/piece of clothing/etc. that I've Googled for.  Now that you mention it, the best marketing tactic for me is to have your company listed as one of Google's "top" suppliers of the item in question (the names on the right of the screen).

I'm with Kris.  I google what I want to look for, and smash the pop ups and any other ads that come up while online.  If I want to shop ...... I'll do so on my own time, thank you.

I just got one on a med-info site. I click on Cephalalgia and in the middle of the screen is a little window asking what kind of fries I like in order to win a $50.00 certificate to McDonalds.

Now I have a Cephalalgia!

I shop online a lot.  I have never bought anything as a result of an ad or pop-up.  I'm a skeptic and research any place that I will share my credit card no with.  I also make sure the online site is recommended and legit.  I will pay a little extra for a little peace of mind.

What an online site needs to do to get my business is make the site convenient to use, charge little or nothing for shipping, have an outstanding return policy and don't bug me.  Oh, having what I want helps too.

I have also found that any site that allows me to make purchases using Jonnys credit card makes my A list.

The only thing I have ever bought on line are airline tickets. That is only because I know for sure, absolutly, positively where they come from. I would NEVER buy anything from any place where I cannot see, feel, hear, taste or smell it up close and personal. Pop ups and those irritating flashing banner adds just piss me off. That's one reason my computer comes into my house via cable and not the dialup Blue Light Special from K Mart.

I rarely get popups but I hate having to wait for an ad or flash to complete it's thing before I get to the news.

Cat, here's my replies:

1. I HATE pop up adds! Some sites have too much of them.

2. I sometimes click the banners, but solely if they are some competition.

3. Online ad strategies have not made me return to any site. My internet time is divided between news sites and sites of interest like CH.com. I have participated into some competitions on the sites I regurlarly visit, though.

Good luck with your work!  Smiley

Do pop up ads tend to drive you away from a company?  Absolutely
Do you ever click through on banner ads?    I guess about as much as anyone else.  Very very very rarely, which I assume is about the norm.
If a company has an interactive marketing program (like the dellf and the 3d prize box) are you more likely to return to their site even if you don't purchase something?  Yes, but only if that company is competitively priced otherwise.
Have you experienced online marketing strategies that have caused you to go to a new company and stick with them?  Yes.  If a company sponsors a page I frequent I am likely to give them business, even if it costs a bit more.  An example is AR15.com... they have a very active sponsor base.  If you go to their page, you can see that their sponsors are listed as more than just the mundane banners.  Also, several vendors are active on the AR15.com forums, offering special deals and product support.  That also draws my business.

Pop up ads are the DEVIL!!!!!!

I can't stand pop up ads, flashy doodads, little windows that slide down and show an ad, blinky crarp that's supposed to get your attention. None of it.

I will NEVER do any business with any company that I see a pop up ad for. I work with computers every day. I spend ungodly amounts of time cleaning crap of of our systems. Most of the crap that gets on our systems is from our (highly educated?) users clicking through links and getting spyware/malware installed on our systems.

If your company is legit, your work will speak for itself without irritating computer users to get the word out there.

Ditto. When I'm looking for something, I usually do a Google search. If it comes up in the first 5 or 10 links, it has a good chance of being clicked. I don't click banners or pop-up ads. EVER. If I click on a link for an on-line store, if they have a bunch of Java shit and blinking flashing text, I leave. The most important things are:

1. Is the site easy to navigate?
2. Is it easy/pleasant on the eyes?
3. Is it secure?
4. Is it easy to make the purchase and make payment?
5. Is there a phone number I can call, in case something happens with my order? (i.e. Email is good for general stuff, but if I have a specific issue with my order, I like to be able to pick up the phone and speak to someone who has their head pulled out of their azz.)

I think Amazon.com is a good model for setting up an on-line store. Very low-key, not tech/flash intensive. Just good merchandise for a good price, and then once a purchase is made, it's easy to track.

Exactly.    http://www.mozilla.org

But, no, I would never buy anything from any store with a pop-up ad. Ever. Nor any of that flashing stuff. I only see this stuff at work, and then rarely.

I don't get many banner ads either while I'm at work, but I never click on them. If they have to go to such extremes to get my attention, I don't want to buy from them.

malibu rum has games on it, particularly their dominoes game... people are a little addicted and often drink malibu while playing.

if you haven't read "the tipping point", though i'm pretty sure you have, but if you haven't--do.

i hate banners and pop-ups--i ignore and disable, but things that are visually amazing--great graphics/concepts/falsh--and interactive such as games--that don't require me to (knowingly) give up privacy such as email address or identifying info, yeah, i pretty much am attracted. but, i'm also a content junkie, and many consumers aren't. but, for the content junkies, it's nice to include white papers, articles, etc. on a product or service--if one is interested, i want to be able to find more info easily.
