I was doing some work around the house last night, and had an odd experience: I got hit with what felt like the beginnings of a CH, but it wasn't heavy enough to even qualify as a shadow. It was just the familiar pressure and ache in my right eye... Just a touch, though. I'm not due for a cycle until February, as far as I can tell, so this was rather mystifying.... Fortunately, it was only one incident, remained mild, and was gone after about half an hour. This is the second one I've had in the past two months. What the hell IS this??

Well, this next cycle, I'm going to try it without any medication, if I can. I think my last cycle was prolonged and intensified by the medications.

I agree with nani to a point here Frank darlin....Maybe the beast is giving you a head start, that or it's a sign that he's gonna mix it up some on you? Please know you are in my thoughts dear...not sure what your battle plan is this time round, but may be time to get the fortress ready? Luv ya Bro!

Had a bout of that last Spring. Never went full blown. Skipped me this year. Hope you are as lucky Frank. Went many years in the beginning without meds. Cycles were never as long as when I did meds. Who Knows? Steve G

Frank, I've just recently started the cycle that I thought missed me. I'm having a lot of shadows right now and a lot of them are exactly what you just described. They hit real fast and stay for just a couple of minutes. They don't have anywhere near the pain as a full blown CH but they feel familiar enough to know what they are. I think it's time to get ready to rumble with the beast for a while. Sorry to hear that it's starting early for you. Hopefully, it will also end early. Pat BTW: It's on the wrong side this time. Usually on the right side. Most of the hits are now on the left side. Go figure......

Thanks, Dear. At this point, the only thing I really have to prepare is possibly an ice pack, and to gear myself up mentally/spiritually for combat. *buckling myself in...*

You know Frank, I thought the very same thing about meds dragging out the cycles. In fact I used to try to battle at least 1 or 2 CHs solo - OUCH. For whatever reason I think my cycles ended shortly after those hard fights. It's just hard to know how the cycle might have unfolded without the meds. So, I wouldn't start any meds until the cycle hits either. But that wouldn't prevent me from stocking up on the trex. Stick it in your desk at work, your car your overnight bag everywhere you can think of. Get the O2 charged up too. If your hits are anything like mine the willpower to fight the beast totally anarmed will give way to reason - FAST. At least you won't be dancing and wildly swinging at doors and walls damaging your house pissing off your family members.

| It's gonna be a real bitch to do it but I believe you're right Frank. I basically went med-free for the first 12 years or so and my cycles never lasted as long as they have since I started using Imitrex in '98. It seems like they went from weeks to months. Nowdays I'm using the alternative therapy and I haven't been hit or used any 'trex in almost 22 months. life has been pretty darned good without the beast. Jim

PF vibes for my Jeepster friend Perhaps it was a warning shot across the bow. Perhaps it was totally random. I'm not going to lecture about meds vs. not, that's your path to choose. In either case remain balanced and do what you need to do to be prepared for yourself. Then see what each day brings. I know you're brave enough and strong enough to do battle if you need to. -R

LOL Pat...I was thinking something like that, too. Frank...I guess you know yourself better than anyone, but, no meds? At all? Hope you're at least going to use oxygen. I'm not brave enough to even think about no meds, no less try to do it. I'm a chicken shit when it comes to pain... I hope it all works out for you, dude. I'm sending vibes and hugs and prayers...

I wish you the best with the no med route. I've been off any preventative for several years. For me the meds seemed to quit working anyway. Hopefully you'll have some abortives on hand for the really bad battles.

Thanks, everyone. I've pretty much weaned myself off of the headbanging. If it gets bad enough for that, I can usually just softly, rhythmically "pat" my eye/forehead with the fleshy part of my palm and it seems to diffuse the pain somewhat. I also make myself relax inwardly, and surrender, rather than fighting against it and getting all tensed up. This seems to help a lot. Last cycle, I only used Imitrex twice, and one of those was just to see what it would do. The 'trex hangover isn't worth it, though. The next day, I was shadowing like crazy, and prior to using 'trex, I'd never experienced a shadow. I fought these things for eight years with no medications and the cycles were intense and excrutiating, but the worst thing was not knowing what was going on, why I was having this pain, and not having any idea of what to do about it. I wasted a lot of money on sinus medications and other worthless crap. Now that I know what I'm dealing with, the only question is what to do about the pain and how to handle it, and I think I've developed a system of relaxing, breathing, and surrendering, that seems to work well for me. Hopefully, this is/was just an anomaly. Time will tell. I may yet decide to go back on Verapamil. I don't know. Thanks again. -Frank

If for no other reason than to keep the 10's away Frank, Verap may be an option. I always say anyone touch my verap and they will pull back a bloody stub. If I can keep the 10's at bay thats a success in my book. (the 8's and 9's are still hell though)

Sounds TOTALLY CRAZY to me, but then again I also went 20 years without meds. OD'd on sinus meds though. But I also know the pain got worst over the last 2 years and I now am chronic. Well, if you go without meds you're a better man than me, OH wait I'm not a man!!!Thats probably why!! Best of luck!

| LMAO! I may break down and go see my doctor, or try the alternate therapy, but first I just want to see how this plays out. Thanks again, everyone.

I like this plan though b/c it shows where your mind is and that you are prepared. I would get all the needed from anykindmeds, abortives ect. B/c I don't really see you breaking of loss of discipline so you might as well be armed. I did this my last cycle but backwards. Started on many drugs and all it did was add to the problems and not stop the headaches. It seems like there really is something to just standing up to them. And you have the military training and discipline of mind, a nice advantage. Have you tried dragging your head to a weight machine and pumping serious weight? I swear this broke my last cycle but like anythingwith chs. could be fluke, nothing ot only worked for me and once. As for the shadows, I would suit up and arm myself then do your best to forget it dude. Not worry about it other than whats needed, planning in the event of and making sure u are ready. After that I wouldn't even think about the fuckers b/c I find that only adds to the hell. either way, good luck man Andrew

Thanks. I've never tried lifting weights or running in the middle of a CH, but that might be something to try. I also have an inversion table and I tried that one time. BIG BIG MISTAKE!! Thanks again. -Frank
