Lava Lamp Left on Stove Explodes, Kills Man Dec 1, 9:12 AM (ET) SEATTLE (Reuters) - A Washington state man who placed a lava lamp on a hot stove died when the lamp exploded and a glass shard pierced his heart, police said on Tuesday. Phillip Quinn, 24, was found dead in his trailer home on Sunday night in Kent, about 15 miles south of Seattle. "There appeared to have been an explosion that was centered on the stove top. There were glass fragments all over, embedded in the walls," said Paul Petersen, a Kent police spokesman. A lava lamp features blobs of wax in liquid that rise and fall in a container when heated by a bulb at the base of the lamp. Quinn was probably standing in front of the lamp when it exploded, then stumbled into his bedroom and died, Petersen said, citing a medical examiner's report. http://reuters.excite.com//article/20041201/2004-12-01T141250Z_01_N30497 483_RTRIDST_0_ODD-ODD-LAVALAMP-DC.html

| If your son is stupid enough to boil it on a hot stove, then yes... rush it back at once Broomie. Be sure to hide all the deadly spoons and butter knifes before you leave. /glad the US banned lead paint

| Yeah, I agree with Rock. I think if you were in America, you might have something to worry about. But seeing as you are not, I am sure that your son, knows that the only things that belong on the stove are pots and pans.

I wouldn't worry about it, Broomie. When used properly, they are fairly safe assuming they work at all. My son's lava lamp quit working even with a new bulb. The wax just quit flowing up and down the inside the lamp. I imagine this moron's lamp quit working so he put it on the stove to try to "restart it." He probably didn't know or didn't remember that heating a sealed container full of liquid would cause it to explode. No doubt a product of our public school systems. I'm checking the Darwin Awards website as I type. Gator

| Yep. I would like to add to the list my wife's good intentions but sadly they are usually too far from the stove to do much of any good. Lucky that I can operate those dangerous kitchen tools myself or I might starve...

| No. He was rewinding his "Dukes of Hazzard" tapes and putting new batteries in his singing fish plaques. What a moron. I had a Lava Lamp. I think we left it at dad's old office though. Looked good next to the bobbing head bird. Charlie

Hey, Melissa .... thanks for the article. My nephew is doing his science fair on 'how to build a lava lamp'. This article came in quite handy ! He added a category .... 'what NOT to do with a lava lamp'. LOL
