California

We raced down Santa Monica
Boulevard at dawn on your motorcycle,
both of us still half stoned from
the all-night party that we crashed.
I tip my head way back and feel the silky
wind against my neck as
palm trees illuminated against the
golden sunrise sky
wave in gentle benediction.
I'm all of twenty years old and laughing into
the wind that morning,
I am the king of the world.

Frank, I have some fond memories of CA when I was in College, but mostly, I can't stand the place.  Last time I moved out of that overpriced meatgrinder of a sardine can it took me 2 years of trying.  Never moving back - EVER.  Unless you're sitting on $5M+ you have to struggle to keep your head above water - for WHAT I CAN'T YET FIGURE OUT - CLOSE PROXIMITY TO DISNEYLAND???.  Even then you still can't buy your way out of the traffic jams and smog.  I don't get it.

Try another poem that more accurately depicts So Cal life so others don't get the wrong impression.

I agree California is terrible, especially So Cal.  No one should consider moving to or visiting California, and I think many living in California should leave.  The weather is not that nice and the beaches are a joke.

Heavy sigh.....I wish I could disagree with all of you, but I can't.   I grew up and lived in So. Calif.  until 17 yrs. ago when I moved to No. Calif.  AND..for the reasons listed here.  Smog, Traffic, crime etc.

However.  There are millions of people who live there for a reason (including all my kids)

Jobs are there to be had.

Everyone has a script for a movie that anyday now someone will discover..

The weather is indeed temperate if you're tired of harsh winters or boiling summers...

in an hour one can drive to the mountains, the desert, or the ocean.

There are cultural places to go. (Opera, museums, art)

VERY excellant colleges. (UCLA, and USC to name 2)

Hollyweird:  In it's own class of mis-distinction.

Hey Steve?  how about the best surfing this side of Hawaii?

A little farther North...the best wine growing region in the US.

Frank,  I used to ride down Santa Monica Blvd. too.  On a big beautiful purple  Harley..Yeah those were the days.

Aw jeez. Now I feel like the head of the chamber of commerce.

My interpretation of the poem is that it isn't so much about California, but about being 20. Just my  twocents
Ah- being 20... brings back memories... Smiley

nani, you missed a few...

Smog.
Traffic.
Earthquakes
Riots.
Taxes.
Rules.
Nutcases.
Absense of affordable even modest housing.
Shit, even gas costs 15% more than anywhere else!!!

To sum it up: Quality of life in CA STINKS.

Ride hard die free.........always thought California was the coolest place even tho I never been there.....guess I am wrong ? Myrtle Beach is the place to be with warm sunny wind in yer face as ocean waves crash beside ya. Live ta ride....ride to live Pam

Ohio is a very pretty state in summer esp mid to southern Ohio....but....winter comes on fast and furious and lasts way too dam long. Most Ohio'ns are suicidal or nuts by March......but onset of summer in a few keeps us sane....kinda....sorta.

No No NO!!!  Frank, I don't disapprove of the subject.  I want you write as many poems about CA as you like!  Just try to make them believable.  Write about the brown skies, the 5-hour commutes, the despair, the shattered dreams, bankruptcies... you know, reality.

There,  Sound like a plan?

Oh, and jonny, guess where I picked to live?

I had the entire country to choose from as I work from home and travel on occasion.  Yep, Tucson AZ.  Almost never gets real hot (over 105 is what I call hot).  Hell, even at 105 I freeze when I get out of my pool 'cause whe it's that hot it's dry (10%RH or less) and your body becomes an evap cooler.  Shit, it got down to 28deg last night.  I'm ready for 100 deg - bring it on.

Great electrical storms in the summer, a gulley-washer or 2, dark skies so you can see a billion stars, normal people, reasonable cost of living and a lot of sunshine.

Well, I've been to San Diego twice and I LOVE that city!!  I do love WI though, with all it's seasons and there are many wonderful things about this state.  I have said though, that if anything were to happen to my family where my hubby and kids were gone, I'd move to San Diego by myself and rent a tiny appt. near the ocean while working as a waitress or somethin.
