I'm back...with the usual craziness!

Ahhh finally the holiday week is over.  What normal person would be glad that their week off has ended and now they have to go back to the 12 days on/2 days off schedule??  ME!  But then, I'm not normal.  haha  So I promised to update on some of the chaos.

A few of you know that I was in a car accident when coming home from my maternity clinical one Friday afternoon a few weeks ago.  A young gentleman in some sort of rather old Jeep-type thing (yeah....only in a Jeep! Wink  Wink  rammed into the back of my beeeeeeeeeauuuutiful '95 white Ford Taurus.  Well, I never called the cops, but I did get all his info.  He was freaked, and I was trying to keep us both calm because we were on a major road with lots of traffic.  My trunk wouldn't shut after that...yeah it was fun!

So then....the week before this past one, I started clinicals at AI Dupont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Delaware.  I'm doing pediatrics until Christmas!  I have only been there for one day, which was Tuesday of that week.  It's about an hour or so from my house, so I have to leave pretty dang early in the morning, but the problem was coming home!

About 5-10 minutes from home, my transmission bit the dust...only I wasn't quite sure what in heck was going on!  I sounded like I was driving a lawnmower up the street.  Brrrrrrrrr, hit 25mph, bam go fast, hit 35, slow down to 10...start all over...AHHH!!!  So my dad convinces me to drive the car down to our repair place.  Find out later that day...byebye transmission!!!  So byebye White Taurus!!   My 3rd car because we get them from a great guy who buys used cars at auctions, has them fixed up, and then resells them.  All of my cars have been under $3 grand.  This one lasted probably about 5 years or so, and it had over 150,000 miles on it.  So it was a good car!

Now I have a maroon '95 Mercury Sable.  It's kinda like driving the same thing but it has a moon roof.  Oh and electric buttons to move the front seat up and down!  Woohoo!  Good for us short peeps.  I'm saving my pennies for someday when I can buy myself a Honda Accord...silver....more details whenever I think of them!  But that's a lot of years away!

So then, on Wednesday I went to my mom's school as part of our community pediatric observation.  I sat with the school nurse all day, who I've known for years, so it was pretty fun!  Very few kids are really sick when they come to the nurses' office..it's hilarious.  But we had fun anyhow!

That night, my dad offered to drive me back to Philly but he wanted to wait for traffic to die down.  Well I thought that might be awhile, so I called Dell regarding my laptop, which I'd been putting off.  My power cord is breaking apart again, the CD-RW/DVD drive just doesn't even work (for a really long time!), the fan is starting to go again, and I have so many viruses that I can't get rid of!!!  So Dell finally agreed that I have a "lemon" for a laptop since almost everything except the hard drive was replaced not that long ago!!  I have an Inspiron 5100, which I don't think they make anymore.  I will be getting something equivalent from Dell any day now!  Wink  I'm going to be even more careful with that one!!  No beating it with my fist when I get angry at it or have a bad headache.  Actually, my roommate did do that to her old laptop, so she's not allowed to have them anymore!! hahaha

My AVN in my knees has steadily been getting worse.  Or should I say quickly getting worse?  I can't go up and down stairs very well anymore, so fortunately my family tries to help out as much as possible.  I think they see the exhaustion and pain in my face.  Then a couple of Mondays ago, my shoulder starting hurting really badly.  I can feel particular points where it is hurting, but it will radiate up the left side of my neck and down my back when it gets bad...sometimes down my arm.  This will sound hilarious, but I'm very much hoping it is just a pinched nerve or torn tendon/ligament or something rather than having AVN move to my shoulder too!!!  SOB!!  lmao  I love those heat packs that you can put on them though...they are great for sure!

to be continued.... Wink  (you know me...all or nothing!)

Hope the craziness calms for you pretty soon. Glad you weren't as injured as the car. Hope you start feeling better soon too.
Be kind to your new laptop coming. Those things can be fragile sometimes (right Melissa?)   Wink

So last Thursday, I'd had it with the headaches.  My meds suck.  None of them do shit in my opinion, but when I go off all of them, I get sicker...so maybe they do something, but definately not enough!  So I called my neuro's answering service.  I swear he must've called me back from a bar or something!  It was soooooooo loud in the background.  At that point, I was just having a really bad migraine so sound was not my friend.  He told me to come in Friday morning at 9am to go to infusions, which is kind of like Day Hospital for headache patients.  I told him it would make more sense to do a direct admit because infusion never does anything for me, but he said they weren't admitting the week of Thanksgiving.  Suuuuuuuuuure...I'm a freaking nursing student.  I only have off on the holidays, but they won't work then!  Dumbarses...lol

So I decide that I'm not going to make it to Friday morning without jumping out the 9th floor window first from the pain, so I went to the ER.  The triage nurse was definately a bitch and didn't like headache patients but oh well.  After waiting for an hour (this is the ER at Jefferson where I used to work!), my roommate Diane came over and sat with me.  Then around 11 or so, James (ex boyfriend) came down and I finally got called back at 11:30.  James stayed until 2:30am, which was very kind of him!

One doc came back, and I handed her my list of daily medications, current medical conditions, and extra meds I had taken that day.  And yes it fit on the front of one page...so chill. Wink  She wanted to start me on fluids, toradol, reglan, and DHE.  Then I had a cluster in the ER.  Good timing I tell ya!  I'm more of a shaker/rocker type sufferer, so I asked for O2 and they got it for me pretty fast.  No argument there.  Then the attending came in and wanted to do the neuro exam mid-attack.  I honestly don't even remember it!  haha  He was a good doc, though.

All of the ER residents and nurses were wonderful.  Except the one nurse said to me and James that he had always learned that men didn't get migraine and women didn't get clusters!!!  James spoke up...he said, "well I'm a man (a 6'2" black man at that), and I get migraines, and she obviously gets clusters.  hahaha  Go James.  The ER residents were working to get me admitted..even if it was just for a few days.

Well the neuro resident came down sometime in the middle of the night, and said that they didn't want to admit me, but they were going to try reglan and droperidol and get me out of there in time for my 9am appt for infusion.  Both those meds drive me nuts, so the ER gave me Ativan first.  I'd asked for Cogentin, but Ativan is what they like...ok fine by me.  I woke up at about 8:30am, still at a level 7 in pain.  The doc gave me discharge instructions and the nurse removed my IV.

This is the great part.  I have to get up to the 8th floor to the headache center.  I was alone at this point, and I was drugged off my ass.  I swear people must have been looking at me like....did she come off the streets?  I was wearing my pajamas and carrying a Nike bag that had a torn zipper.  I get to the Headache Center and they freaking tell me that my neuro is at grand rounds and won't be back till 10am!  WTF is that all about???  Why did he tell me to come in at 9???  Prolly cuz he WAS out at a bar when he told me to do that.  So I half wandered back across the street to my apartment and just zonked and finally got a clear head by about 10:45pm.  What a mess!!

My parents have decided that they definately want to come to my neuro appt on the 9th.  They are upset about this entire thing.  First off, they think my meds are all messed up and need reevaluating.  Then, they want to know why my neuro is treating me like a thorn in his side when I have been nothing but overly compliant and shit I even used to work there...for free!

So, that's coming up.  I have to call my usual orthopedic on Monday to schedule an appt for the shoulder, and then we'll be all set.

Talk about some real fun I've been having lately!!!

But at 3pm today I start orientation for my externship which switched over to Maternity.  So from 3-11:30 I get to play around with babies and do other fun stuff!!!  Gotta get going because I need to get my stuff ready, but I just thought I'd give an update.

I hope at least some of this stuff makes you laugh because I figure if you don't laugh, you'll cry...and I am DONE with crying (at least for today!!!)  Hopefully things'll be looking up, and I plan to find time to stick around this place more often!!!

Hugz,
Carrie Smiley
