U.S. Census Bureau

I received a questioneer from the U.S. Census Bureau.  Anyone else receive one and is it TRUE that I MUST fill it out.

They ask stuff like:
When do you leave your house to go to work each day ?
How many weeks did you work last year?
What's your income?
How much did you pay for your house ?
What jobs have you had?
What type of work do you do when performing your job ?
How much interest did you receive on your saving accounts ?

The list goes on and on. I really hate to fill this out, but it says it is required by law and if I don't they will come to my house.

By law you have to respond.  However, I'm pretty sure the only information you're required to give is the basics.

Quote:

TITLE 13 > CHAPTER 7 > SUBCHAPTER II > § 221
§ 221. Refusal or neglect to answer questions; false answers

(a) Whoever, being over eighteen years of age, refuses or willfully neglects, when requested by the Secretary, or by any other authorized officer or employee of the Department of Commerce or bureau or agency thereof acting under the instructions of the Secretary or authorized officer, to answer, to the best of his knowledge, any of the questions on any schedule submitted to him in connection with any census or survey provided for by subchapters I, II, IV, and V of chapter 5 of this title, applying to himself or to the family to which he belongs or is related, or to the farm or farms of which he or his family is the occupant, shall be fined not more than $100.
(b) Whoever, when answering questions described in subsection (a) of this section, and under the conditions or circumstances described in such subsection, willfully gives any answer that is false, shall be fined not more than $500.
(c) Notwithstanding any other provision of this title, no person shall be compelled to disclose information relative to his religious beliefs or to membership in a religious body.

So, basically that says by refusing to answer *any* of the questions, you risk a fine of $100.  I doubt it is enforced aggressively.

The Census Bureau wants to know when you leave for work? Sounds weird to me.

I've never received something like that....I don't think. Look it over.

Send it back with as little info as possible. So long as it's returned with anything at all, you have nothing to worry about.

Ring them and ask if this is a real census form or a joke. Unless they are trying to do something about rush hours I can't see why on earth they would want to know when you leave for work... and what if you are late? huh? And as for how many weeks did you work.. I can't honestly say I WORKED for a whole week any week!! Wink

I'll have to re-read it when I get home. Don't remember that question.

The questioneer is not a joke, it's official U.S. Census crap. I believe they are wanting to know about traffic times when asking about leaving for work. Still sounds as if someone will be coming by after you leave for work.

Johnny's right---the Census is there to see how many reps there will be based on the number of people living within a specific municipality, or area.

The rest of that is garbage and I'm frankly shocked they have the audacity to request it. Tell them one, or two (however many people living full time in your home) and seal the envelope or slam the door.

Basically, nobody is going to make a federal case out of it if you refuse to answer, but the law allows them to ask *anything* they deem appropriate to serve the public good, and you can bet a lot of tax dollars were spent vetting out any questions they are positive they can legally ask.  Like it or not, it's a maximum of $100 fine if you refuse.  I've never heard of somebody being fined though.

Get this... they have such a hard on for getting this info that if they make 6 attempts to get it from you (at least 4 of them in person) and they fail, they can then start asking (legally) your neighbors for the info.
