Oh No Chicken Pox

Sammie and Antoinette, ages 4 and 3. Antoinette has a few bumps a mild fever so far and just waiting to see when Sammie's will start. Oh I'm sure by tomorrow we will be in for a long itchy sick children treat. My poor babies. And I gotta work weds and I've NEVER been away from them sick!  Just sent sam to Walmart so we are all set with Ibuprofen, calimine, oatmeal, etc.

oh yucky! Colin had the vaccine so we haven't had to deal with chicken pox other than a few little bumps and they were gone in less than a week. Much better for them to get them now than when they are older. I had them at age 17 and it SUCKED!

Be GLAD that they are getting them now! I had it at age 22, and it nearly killed my ass! It'll probably be miserable for a couple of weeks, but they'll go away and they'll never have them again.

I got them for the first time at 18 - and as Frank says, the older you get them the nastier they are.
I then got them at 25, didn't think they could be chickenpox again so went to the doctor and I then got them again both times Brid and Barney got them (separately!) I actually saw the doctor every time and he said I'm just unlucky.. (like I hadn't guessed that!)
don't let them scratch if you can, they scar!
Good luck Tara, I'll be thinking of you but at least you can get them over when they are young!

My boys(now 6 and 10) both got the vaccine, and then later got chicken pox(at ages 8 and 4) anyway. One got a good case and one just got sick...no bumps.
I had them when I was 16...missed 6 weeks of school, I was soooo ill.
they'll handle it better as little ones.
When your kids are sick it's hard to leave them.I'll be thinking of you and your cherubs!
PS. A nice relaxing bath will be good for you too!

So far not too bad. Antoinette has a few more bumps, but they aren't even big yet. She hasn't even noticed YET! Sammie has nothing so far. Both my kids are pickers (they always pick their boo boo's) esp Sammie, he's the worst, so that's gonna be a challenge, want little or no scarring of course! I don't even know if I had chicken pox as a kid. I remember my mom saying 2 of us got it and 2 of us didn't. But she passed a few years ago so obviously I can't ask her. I hope the heck I don't get them! Also I'm thinking I might not be able to work anyways cause the 75 yr old man I take care of, I don't know if he's been vaccinated recently or anything and he's been fighting pnemonia for weeks now so his immune system is down. I'll be a carrier of the virus even if I don't actually get it right?

How old is Jasper? I'm kinda glad they are getting them before they start school (if Sammie does get it too). BUt it totally messed up our Thanksgiving plans. This is our first Thanksgiving here in WV as a family (Sam grew up here and in NH) and he was really looking forward to spending the holiday with his Dad's family. But they have a 11 yr old who has never had it. I'm thinking he's probably gonna get it though cause they live right next door so he is over all the time and he has been exposed before we knew about it. There is always Xmas and next year of course. But the kids were excited they LOVE going over to Mamaw's and Papaw's and we'd been hyping them up for THanksgiving there all week.

I thought your kids already had the chicken pox...??? that is so weird... why did I think that they already had them...??? anyway this is what I tell people to do with little ones and the chicken pox... get a paint brush and let her paint her chicken pox with Caladryl (calamine) Lotion. Its fun and keeps your mind off the itching. We were watching old videos of Breezy and saw her painting her chicken pox and it was adorable... She was about 2 1/2 broke out on the 4th of JULY............ love to you Ree

We had a pox "scare" the summer b4 last (I think that was when) but turned out to be severe hives and heat rash cause of the high humidity and heat.

Jasper is three going on 21! It sounds so funny to hear of people avoiding it, here if any kids get chicken pox we get them all together to get it over and done with. Is the 11 yr old girl sick with anything else or at risk if she gets the pox? If not I'd expose her if I was her mum.
Ree oh I can relate to that! I had a big row with one of my friends once as I was absolutely convinced her son had measles - I had dreamed it but it was so real I was convinced it was true.. even now if someone asks have I ever known anyone get measles I have to stop myself from saying Matt!

Chicken Pox at 28... almost did me in. I was POSITIVE I had already had them, wasn't to worried about being exposed to them. As a parent of a 5 and 3 year old at the time, I came into contact with Chicken Pox a couple times and man, I wish I was more paranoid BEFORE I got them. I was out of work almost 6 weeks.

Rare but some people get them more than once and some people get the "shingles" in later years. My mom said I only had one, she brought me home to them when she was in the hospital having me. Both of my older brothers came down with them... 2 weeks later as an infant (infants have no immunity to chicken pox) I broke out with one chicken pox. My Scott had them first a mild case then Sean had a vicious case because he had direct exposure living in the same bedroom. I have never gotten the chicken pox again and my mom was told I could get them again because I had such a mild case. One of my brothers never got them.........love ree

How are the kids now? I sympathise completely as my little boy (5) is currently suffering really, really badly from chicken pox.
The spots started on Wednesday and he now has many, many hundreds from his hair to in his ears, to his willy and bum down to even the soles of his feet.
Poor little bugger can't rest or sleep, doesn't want to play and if he watches videos, just spends the whole time scratching despite gallons of calamine, bicarb baths and oral antihistamines every 4 hours. He is also scratching in his sleep, even though we have tied a pair of socks onto his hands!
Just tell me someone please, when will the infernal itching go away as he is so very unhappy.

Have you tried giving him some Piriton? It helped my kids stop being so itchy and they liked the taste of it too.. I hope it helps!

Wendy- I was 17 when I had the "pox" - also had 100's of the little buggers. I had them on the soles of my feet as well, my mom took me to the dr and they gave me a shot to help me sleep. It is miserable but Helen is right- until they start to scab over they will itch miserably. Sending hugs to a scratch free vibes to your little man! I feel for you honey!

Yes, he's having Piriton Syrup every four hours and loves it too, says it tastes like toothpaste!
I don't know if it is doing any good but I daren't stop giving it to him.

So far my kids have very mild cases (knock on wood) the worst area's on both of them being their bum's. They are a bit crabby esp in the evening, not sleeping well and running mild fevers. We are using caldryl, benedryl, and ibuprofen. Also alternating oatmeal and baking soda baths.
Wendy I read a few diff places that Aveno Oatmeal Anti-itch lotion works wonderfully, but it's a bit pricey. What we got now seems to be working but maybe you should give that a try. Oh I feel for your poor guy. I hope our luck continues that it stays mild. From what I've read 7-10 days is average from onset of the pox themselves before they start to clear up, the pox all dry out, and they aren't contagious anymore. I think 2 weeks at the most before he is better. I know my kids are getting cabin fever awful (actually we all are)!

Thanks to you and everyone for the tips. He's asleep now, but last night he only slept in very small snatches as he kept being woken by the itching.
Can't go anywhere or see anyone as he is actually dangerous to anyone pregnant or immune deficient.
Frankly he couldn't go anywhere anyway as he looks like he's had a fight with a lorry load of white emulsion paint as he has so much calamine on him.
here's hoping tomorrow is a better day, at least his Dad is around to give me a break from the howling of "Mum" every time I try and go to do anything.

I've just remembered something important.. Tara and Wendy neither of you are taking Pred are you? Chicken Pox is very dangerous to anyone on steroids.. says so on the card I have to carry but I don't know why!

That's what I meant about my son being dangerous to immune suppressed people, steroids are one of the things which damp down your immune system (also chemo does it), meaning any immunity you may have had from the past is probably not there.
Thankfully we have both had the pox and neither of us are on steroids.

I had gotten a dose of IV solumedrol (steroid) a couple weeks ago and just barely was fininshing a 10 pred taper when this whole pox thing started. I have a mild, very mild case of pox also. Feel a little crappy, itchy and tired. Keeping watch that I don't get real sick but we all seem to be very lucky with this. I think I'm gonna be fine. And I also think we lucked out that the kids have it mild (so far so good anyways)
