Puter Problems

Seems the power supply in my computer at home bit the dust last night....so I won't be online from home for about a week. Fortunately, my computer is still under warranty and they are sending me a new power supply via Fed Ex.
Just wanted to let y'all know so my chat buddies won't worry about me.
I may hook up the old computer or I may just take this opportunity to step away from the keyboard for a few days and clean house, spend more time with the kids, have a life, etc  .
I have never replaced a power supply on a computer before....any no-no's or helpful hints I need to know about before I start on it?
I will be checking in sporadically from work...when the boss isn't looking of course 
PFDAN's to you all and I hope to be back up and running from home soon.

If the power supply is the same as the old one it will be easy. First unscrew the screws that hold it in place, they are usually all on the outside of the case, but sometimes they may have some inside. Remove the dead supply leaving all the wires hooked up. Screw the new one into place. Then one at a time remove a plug from the board, and devices and replace them with a matching plug from the new power supply. It is a good idea to do this with one hand while touching a metal part of the case with the other. This is to limit static discharge. If you have to use bot hands don't worry, just remember to touch the case from time to time. If there are extra plug that don't go anywhere just let them hang. It is easiest to do this with the box laying with the open side up. I alway turn it over afterwords to let any foreign parts fall out.

You sound like a buddy of mine who is happy when he only has a handful of parts left over when rebuilding an engine, transmission, etc...

The parts would be metal chips, pieces of wire, and yes screws for the newbie.

No tools needed here. Most of our systems have screwless cases. Easy to work on.
Once in a while, if I get really frustrated, I'll still get the old hammer out though.
Seriously, I was just using a dime as a screwdriver on one of our older systems.
We've also found stranger things than hair pins in our systems.
When we first made printers available to our patrons, we put up signs by the computers saying that the first 2 pages are free and each additional page costs $.05.
Some people in all their intelligence would put nickels into any part of the system that looked like it would accomodate change.
Over the 4 years here, I have collected several dollars in small change.
So bring the duct tape, hair pins, and butter knife/screwdriver and join a winning team.

BTW:I see in your profile that you are from Tool Texas.
Why the question of needing tools? You should be able to bring plenty from home. LOL
