A friend of mine (clusterhead too) had a slight (light? mild?) heart attack 2 weeks ago. He is fine now; go home today. Unfortunately his CH started too. He used to use (grammar?) Imigran but because of the heart attack Imigran is not useable any more. He asked the cardiologist for oxygen and mask but the doctor refused it because "high flow O2 is seriously harmful to lungs." Otherwise this a$$head never heard about the CH! My friend try the O2 at the maximal 7 lpm via nasal canula and it worked in 10 minutes!
My friend go home today but he can't use oxygen. Oxygen is not a standard treatment against CH attack here. It's our f#@&ing insurance!

It has a drying effect on the lungs, but that is why they sell the bubblers, to add moisture to the air, making it safer.
A lot of doctors will only prescribe up to 8Lpm, that is commonly read as recommended in the things doctors read about oxygen for clusters.  My doctor showed me where it said that up to 8 was recommended.  It works for some.
Depending upon the type of occurance, I will range it between 10 and 15Lpm because I need it quickly oversaturated to abort.  Whether 7 will be always effective is questionable.  I can see that if the episode just started, it may be only be strong enough so far that it can be aborted this way.  Mine are more easily aborted at the beginning of an episode.  One month later... things change, faster and harder attacks progressing becomes more common.
Glad he is able to abort the way he has so far.  Hope it keeps working.   Smiley  However, others may help here, oxygen is a common and well known treatment for clusters.  Insurance and doctors are another thing.

Sorry about your friend totka- i'm hoping for his speedy recovery. The paramedic that treated me with O2 a few weeks ago told me that pure oxygen is harmul if we use it too much. He said that our heart and lungs are only used to about 19% (I think this was the number) and too much use of 100% oxygen would render us unable to breathe. I don't know if it's true, but that's what he told me.
