article quote:
Ali has been charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, simple assault, reckless endangerment and possession of an instrument of a crime. Those charges may change because of Sullivan's death.

Those now "insufficient" charges will change. Witnesses, means, and opportunity clearly established.  Though not imperative, motive will soon complete the lifetime sentence, perhaps answering the "why" with sad and ridiculuous reason.  But not demented reason, so insanity plea here... denied.

What's double sick...is that Police also say that the street was crowded with people and not one person came to her aid. They just stood by while someone beat the life out of a young woman.

Where is the compassion for humankind? How could someone just watch without helping?

Am I wrong, here? Cry

The only thing in their defense was that the attack took only a total of 15 seconds, and with the violence of the guy with the bat, I guess apparently everyone felt they couldn't step in.  15 seconds is pretty damn fast....if it had been longer, I would hope that someone would have made an effort to step in.  That area of south street isn't always super busy in the daytime, but still...people ARE there.  That's where I do my food shopping.. I'm down there all the time.  Scary.

It's just a sad, sad thing.  Cry

No one helped her.  Unbelievable.  How long do you have to watch a woman getting beat to death with a baseball bat to know it's wrong?

I'm thinking I woud have taken that bat and turned this bastard into a popsicle.

Just look at your watch and count 15 seconds...and imagine that maybe the first 5 seconds of that you are realizing what in hell is going on??  15 seconds is a very short amount of time.

It is easy to say that we all would have jumped in to help.  Hell, I know I would have wanted to.  But I wasn't there.  I can't say that I would have been able to.  I definately would have jumped right in as soon as those 15 seconds were over, which I believe is what people did in order to rush her to our hospital's ER, but it was too late for her.  The head injury was too severe.  This man was out of an institution not too long ago, and was pretty wacko.

I know it sounds like insane that nobody jumped in to help, but 15 seconds is a very short amount of time, and part of that is spent in that shock before adrenaline phase and trying to figure out what in hell is happening.  By the time you know, the attack is over.

It was a meaningless death.  I have no sympathy for whatever in hell they decide to do to the man who murdered her and beat her in such a way.  He took the life of a very promising young student who could have helped many in her career as a physician.

In no way am I defending those who didn't step in to stop the attack, I'm just stating that because I wasn't there, I don't know that I would have either in that short amount of time between the start and finish of it all.  It is a major tragedy.

I guess none of us down here are as safe as we thought because even disgruntled ex-students can come back in a crazed phase.  It's a bit of a scary thought when we already have the insanity of Philadelphia itself to worry about half the time.  Crime reports hanging on the bulletin boards.  Sketch drawings of serial rapists they are trying to catch.

I'm almost starting to think like Randy that Philly isn't such a great place afterall....  But I guess bad people are everywhere...not just the inner city.  <sigh>

God rest your soul, Lea.  Many many prayers for you, your family, your fiancee, and the students who were closest to you.

You know what, I've lived in CHicago, New York, Washington, DC and Los Angeles... Now I live in rural North Carolina, the job opportunities aren't that good, but I realized something.  Something important....  The predators aren't human!  That is, there are snakes and bears and spiders, but I don't fear the humans like I used to.  I don't lock my doors when I'm home, I leave my car keys IN THE CAR at home.  I don't feel threatened walking around.  I know there are exceptions and all, but for the most part.  I am safe.

Big cities have high concentrations of human predators.

You need to move up to Bucks County. Close enough to drive, but a different world entirely. Soon as you pass north of Route 1, you're in a different world.

BTW....Don't listen to Randy. It's bad for your health. Grin

Edited to add...you're right 15 seconds isn't a whole lot of time to help. I was quoting NBC10.

Well, the police said the perp had bipolar disorder, maybe that had something to do with it.   Fuck your racism.

Floridian,

You are quite right.  It had nothing to do with race.  While there are racial issues in Philadelphia and everywhere else in the country, IMHO...this was not about race.  This man was bipolar and had recently been released from an institution.  More news has broken out about the story over the past few days.  I think that info should be available on any of the major networks in Philadelphia (Fox, WB17, NBC10, ABC-WPVI, etc) and also www.philly.com  However in order to read the Inquirer or any of that fun stuff, you have to sign up as a member...It's free but just one more thing to sign up for.

Not a racial issue at all...just an issue of someone losing their mind.....  Sad

Correct. It's about living in Philly. Big cities suck. One never knows who is standing next to....... er.......one. Vig has the right idea. Move to North Carolina, never lock your doors, sleep well at night, and shoot strangers on your property.

I hadn't read that from the first article posted.  Releases due to institution closures from state cuts leaves many self dependent upon taking their medications on their own.  This is an example of what kind of dynamite is being played with when some illnesses are left to roam society uncontrolled.
Sheds light on the saddening motive.

I just need to say in behalf of the victim, how horrible and terrifying for her to have suffered through such a horrible crime.
I have wanted to post before about my son, who is 33 now and is in a State mental hospital here in Oregon.
Last year in November he just walked up to a young man in the Fred Meyeres parking lot and stapped him in the back, with a knife he had taken from my kitchen.
The handle of the knife broke off on first impact. The young man was just getting off work and into his car.
My son did not know him which makes the crime even more unusual, so they say.
The young man is fine physically, thank god, but I am sure it left and emotional scar.
Anyway, Aaron my son was sentenced to 16 years under the board and is diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder.
He had been gone from Oregon for about 4 years and I came to realize when he came back that he was not quite right in the head, but I had no idea how bad his problems were.
You hear all the time about how they want to close the mental hospitals they lack federal help.
If any of you have seen One Flew over the Cookoos Nest with Jack, that is where Aaron is at and they still use part of that orignal building, he was in that part for the first month of his sentence there.
We have come a long way with treating mental illness, but we still have a long way to go.
It is important to keep dangerous people who can be helped with medication on a short rope.

The racial slam was totally uncalled for and had absolutely nothing to do with it. Would it have made it any less horrific if it were a white American? I think not. A young woman died...jeeeze
