I'm really hatin' all of this Spyware and Adware crap! I use a free Yahoo program called Spybot but I'm not sure how thorough it is. Are there any free programs out there or should I buy one? Jim

Spybot's not bad, although I'm not familiar with Yahoo's version. You might want to try Lava Soft's AdAware. Go to http://www.tom-cat.com/. You'll have plenty of choices and they are all explained well. This is a one stop site for all of your security needs and very trustworthy. ..............alley

www.xandros.com is great for newbies; www.debian.org is a good choice for geeky purists.

Spybot is what I use and I would also advise downloading CWShredder. CoolWeb hijacked my browser and raised all sorts of hell. Strongly advise downloading it now in case you need it later.

Adaware by Lavasoft has a new relase 1.5 i think that is good, simple. Spybot needs to be used carefully since it will pick up backweb lite which is used by HP and Compaq. so be careful what you delete. Sometimes you also have to run the programs more than once. and your are right all this spyware sucks!

Go to www.kommando.com for free links to Adaware, CWS shredder and others. I just got hit with a bunch of them that have shut down my CDROM drive and burner. Been trying for a week to get it all off. I got off the spyware, but haven't been able to reverse the damage. Any ideas? jc

| Yep I'm using HP and when I start up I get messages saying that certain things will not load. I suppose I've f'd up the registry by deleting w/SpyBot on Nov 7th, 2004, 10:57pm, Callico_Kid wrote: ever hear Kim Kommando's radio show? good stuff. A bud sent me this one, and it seems to be heads up. I've used the others as well, but it's one heck of a shooting match, no matter the choice: http://www.webroot.com/ Constant vigilance, RJ

Some of the new more malicious spyware disables the very programs that can remove it. I have some corporate versions of professional programs that I have had great sucess with. I am at work now and am having network problems...again...that will not allow me to send you these files in a timely manner. When I get home in the morning I will send you "Mark's removal kit".......I can kill these bastards for fun......I will get this to you guys asap Be patient...I can fix it! Mark the repairman!

| Backweb lite is spyware, it seems that manufacturers like to put it in there drivers now. If you disable HP's "hp schedule" from starting it should prevent any error statements. As far as I can figure this tells hp how much you use their products, I'm not sure about when you have an hp computer. Using spybots start up disable tool prevents programs from turning themselves back on. on Nov 7th, 2004, 11:49pm, JDH wrote: this stuff is really making the web a struggle |
| Surf safe, get Knoppix, It runs off the CD which makes it virus and spyware free. If you have Win98/ me on the drive you can make a permanent home directory to save bookmarks and plugins on. If you have 2000/XP you will probably need a USB drive or a flash card to do this. If you upgraded your Zone alarm firewall the newer versions tend to disable CD-Burners. It can be a pain to fix.
