Anyone know about art glass? (off topic)

I purchased a Jack-in-the-Pulpit vase at an estate sale and am trying to figure out who it could be made by.  I am thinking perhaps Murano?  Charlie, or anyone, do you have any idea??

Here's a pic...

Thanks!

It certainly has the look of Murano glass.  I have several pieces by Adriano dalla Valentina, one of the five 'masters' of this art.  If it is real, it will most likely have distinguishable marking on the bottom or may even be signed by the artist.  Be aware though, there are many imitations.  Imitations are not necessarily bad or less valuable though.  Are there any markings at all?

No Shawn, no markings at all.  The place I got it from had some exceptional glass pieces too, but I did not have enough cash on me to snatch them all up. Sad  I am just kicking myself because i bought a couple other things that are really not worth much unless I group them together and auction them in a "lot".  *sigh*  Oh well, I'm still learning as I go!

Heck no Redd!!  When I first saw it I was floored at how stunning it was!  I love unique glass pieces and am leaning more and more toward learning as much as I can about them so I can sort of "specialize" in the art glass area.  I am huge glass and pottery art junkie, hehe.

Glad you like it!! Smiley

I had to get back to IL where I was living after admitting Mom to the nursing home.  My brothers and sisters had to empty out her place without my help, and Mom had been saving my Grandmothers antigue glass vases and serving pieces.  Well just before I was able to move back to WI my brother, who was storeing Mom's things in his basement had a flood while they were away for a week on vacation and the wooden shelves that these pieces were on soaked up moisture collapsed and everything got smashed....

So much for my antiques....lol

A good glass gallery would be able to tell you, most likely.  It's still quite possible that it is valuable.  A lot of glass pieces are quite expensive, and a gallery that has these pieces can usually tell if the glass is high quality.

Look carefully at the glass... do you see *any* tiny air bubbles at all?  This is a sign of cheaper glasswork.  Are the colors pure and deep?  Also, it may be an illusion, but the end looks 'pinched' off and not quite like high quality finish work, but I really can't tell from the pic.

OMG Redd, how awful! Shocked  That would have broke my heart!  I'm so sorry. Sad  I felt awful myself a couple weeks ago when I accidently knocked over one of my mothers ceramic figurines that crashed on the basement steps off our partition wall.  It was 1 piece of a set of 2.  They are called Kissing Angels and are a pearl white glaze.  I felt HORRIBLE.  I still have the broken pieces in a ziploc and I swear I'm gonna glue them back together somehow!

Yep Shawn, there are some teeny tiny bubbles and the end is pinched off, so I guess it is a cheap piece... Embarassed

Oh well, it still is quite beautiful!  I think I'll hang onto it and put it in the entertainment center that hubby is gonna build. Smiley

Thanks for your help!

It's spilled milk I suppose...LOL

Takes a real steady hand to glue those things back together and alot of patience to ensure the seams show as little as possible...niether of which I have.. laugh

Pretty thing Mel.

It's been awhile since I had anything nice.

I don't know this one but it looks newer. I'm not the person to ask. If it's an old piece, markings are very difficult to find. It takes a lot of looking.

I like it and Fubar is right.

WhoHoo Glass!  I make a living dealing glass & Pottery ,mostly Rare American made during the depression era. I'm obsessed & addicted big time. I'm considered by many an "Expert" and even have my name in a few books. I'm trying to do a book on a little known company(I have one of the only known catalogs) but it's a slow process for me.
Anyway Mel, unfortunatly your piece is new and doesn't have much value. If you like it though thats all that matters, Enjoy! If you start seriously getting into it you will be amaze at whats out there to be had.  I'll always be glad to help you in any way possible & hope we can keep your "mistakes' to a minimum.

FUbar, would love to see pics of your pieces...

Here's a couple shots.  My ex wife already absconded with the two smaller fish, but I still have the big boy.  These pieces are signed by the artist and I bought them at the studio in Murano, Italy.

Kev, thanks so much hon!  Perhaps one of these days I will learn how to blow glass myself.  Until then it's so much fun just finding pretty, and hopefully unique, pieces. Smiley

Kev

It's about 14" high and 14" wide at the widest point.  It weighs 21.6 lbs, or 10 kg.

It really is a cool piece.  The artist used techniques that are still closely guarded secrets among the masters.
