What a co-ink-ee-dink! I just got back from a brain research seminar where the author of that little ditty was teaching. She uses that paragraph to show that the brain sees in whole words, not individual letters - which is an important thing to know when you are teaching children to read. Too many teacher use phonics to the exclusion of whole words...interesting stuff... Chris

Indeed an easy read for us... If a person has a large enough repertoire of both spoken & written "knowledge" then one should be able to decode such a mess.... on Nov 5th, 2004, 9:20pm, ckelly181 wrote:What a co-ink-ee-dink! | The problem with teaching just whole words (sight reading) if not done properly will inadvertantly teach overgeneralizations amongst words to the supposed object correspondence. A proper reading/writing program will teach a combination of phonetics and whole word. So good point. I love teaching that stuff. MAtching words to objects, objects to words, "finding" sounds....Many fun "games" can be developed if one is creative!! Good stuff. E.

believe it or not, children as young as 2 or 3 can distinguish the letters. IT is the repetition, and the linking the letters to something relavent to them that will get them to "memorize" and "read" My niece at 28 months knew the A, B, C on her crib and truely would read Dr. Seuss books by the time she was 36 months. Once your child point's to the "golden Arches" and says "Mac Donald's!!!!!" They are reading. AFter all reasearch has shown they "read" our facial expressions and learn how to make us smile or frown even as young as 6 months. The next step is to read strangers faces, and then "symbols" What scientists are studing now is if other animals have "language, and if apes can be taight to read."
