Quote: BAGHDAD (Reuters) - U.S. troops urged civilians to flee Falluja on Friday and launched air strikes on the rebel city ahead of an assault seen as critical to attempts to pacify Iraq (news - web sites) before January elections. U.S. forces sealed all roads to the city and used loudspeakers and leaflets in Arabic to tell residents they would detain any man under 45 trying to enter or leave the city. "We are making last preparations. It will be soon. We are just awaiting orders from Prime Minister (Iyad) Allawi," Marine Colonel Michael Shupp told Reuters near Falluja. http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=578&e=1&u=/n m/20041105/ts_nm/iraq_dc |

That's disturbing Interesting how they waited until our elections were over with before they make a move on Falluja. A significant US body count wouldn't have looked too good for Dubya. Jim

The move on Fallujah was on before Nov. 2nd. Iraq's government is now sovereign and calling the shots, just as they were, during the campaign to remove Al Sadr. As for command of US troops, US officers are still in control, but we are assisting the Iraqi government at their request. Not running roughshod over them.

When I was a kid I was told " don't believe anything you hear and only half of what you see" Sounds like he meant approval and not orders. JDH Elections or no elections it has to be done. Waiting until after elections gives more time for preparations and yes politicaly smart.

I would love to know what Bush has done to everyone out there to gather so much personal hatred. Did he kick your dog or something? Or is it because so many people are so used to suckling on the government teat? T

One more factor to consider: Fallujah is FULL of mosques and sites holy to Muslims. The current Iraqi government, as well as the US government and the commanders on the ground, are sensitive to this. It would do no one any good to go in and turn the place into a smoking crater. The Iraqi government is going to give the terrorists (er... insurgents) every chance to surrender and broker some kind of peace. It has to be able to show the rest of the Iraqi people that, "Hey, we tried. We really tried, and they have chosen the path of violence and death, instead." So that's what's happening right now. Ree, I hope your son remains safe, and to all of our troops. The 1st Marine Expeditionary Force is training for urban warfare right now, if it comes to that. Hopefully, it won't, but time for a peaceful solution in Fallujah is running out.

You ask what bush has done? He cut 2 major programs that support affordable housing and community development. Personally he did not kick my dog. He kicked me in the stomach.

| Oh my God! Better get that draft in place fast! The only high body count is going to be on the insurgents side because our fighting men and women are the best in the world. Bout time we got rid of the rest of them and settled the place down. That is what everyone's been hollaring for isn't it? Bush's exit strategy for Iraq = victory

From what I have read, yes it was cut, cut by 630M. It was still 16.3B given to HUD. The reason, even on HUD and other websites was that landlords who offered Section 8 housing, were over charging for rent on those apartments. Saying that, an apartment that would rent on the street, non-Section 8, for $600 per month. They would say that this apartment was renting for $900 per month, to get more voucher money from HUD. Having seen this first hand with my wife's grandmother, I know it goes on. I feel for your prediciment, but if every president ran around and took every single person's situation into account when making a change to any program, nothing would be done in this country. We would still be running around in horse drawn carriages because the makers of buggy whips and their union would have squashed the automobile. It's not pretty and I don't like to be the one pointing it out, but since I'm pretty much flamed on a daily basis for being a Republican...so be it. T

Again, we are fighting with one arm tied behind our back. We don't want to go in with all of our might...It would be a slaughter. I think something big is gonna happen soon over there ... before elections in Iraq. Unsolved

HUD administers fair market and section 8 rents every year. The vouchers go by that.

Since Bush says he has a mandate, he will probably raze Falluja. He has the capacity and it would be his style... and this is now a holy war, you know. Our god is better than your god, etc. Never mind that the more insurgents American troops kill, the more they create. It's a puzzlement. Charlie

Can anyone (Bob possibly ) tell me why, if the US troops are so wonderful, that you need ours to come in and help, and get killed? No-one here understands it. (Sorry about reviving a thread - just back from holiday) Dolly

| You really don't understand it, huh give me a break. Britian and the US had the same amount of BS evidence of WMD in Iraq. Both Britian and the US proposed invading Iraq to the UN. And finally, we invaded Iraq with Britian as a team. No offence, but you guys need to spare us the victim country bullshit.

| How the Hell did I miss this... Oh so our kids arent worthy and deserve to get killed more than yours... Its all about being allies and helping one another. Tony Blair doesn't have a problem with it... We might save your ass in the process also... thanks for the support. Or do you think your country is disinfected from Terrorists... We are all vulnerable. Heck your cops don't even carry guns......... Big bird and Elmo could walk in and take care of your country.

| I don't think I can add much to the other responses Simon. I don't think we "need" your troops to help although we do appreciate the assistance. The answer as to why they are there is with your leadership. I believe the US would fight this war on terror completely alone if it had to.
