Cluster Headache Linked to Heart Defect
Fri Oct 22, 2004 05:21 PM ET

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - New research suggests that cluster headache, a severe type of headache that usually begins around one eye, often occurs together with a heart defect called patent foramen ovale (PFO), in which blood can pass through a small hole from the right to the left side of the heart without going through the lungs first.

In the fetus, the hole (foramen ovale) is open, since blood does not need pass through the lungs to pick up oxygen while the baby is in the womb. After birth, the hole normally closes, but quite often this closure is incomplete. Since it is a small defect, people are often unaware that they have an open (patent) foramen ovale.

As reported in the medical journal Neurology, Dr. Cinzia Finocchi and colleagues, from the University of Genoa in Italy, used ultrasound to look for PFO in 40 people with cluster headache and 40 similar subjects without such headaches.

There was evidence of PFO in 17 patients with cluster headache compared with just 7 headache-free subjects. Having a cluster headache more than tripled the odds of having a PFO.

So, why do the two conditions often occur together? The reason is unclear, but it may relate to lower oxygen levels in the blood. With PFO, blood that bypasses lungs carries less oxygen than normal, and previous reports have suggested that poorly oxygenated blood may help induce cluster headaches.

Further studies are needed to better understand the association between cluster headache and PFO, the investigators conclude.

If we can't produce it naturally, then we'll suck it thru a mask, pay double, and proffer our thanks later.

alley,

I just read your post to my husband Brian.  We talked about it together, brian being the more "scientific" minded of the two of us (lol).  Me having the headaches, and thinking about it's beginnings in the woumb and then thinking about the o2 assistance outside of the woumb..........it felt "familiar".  I realize this prolly sounds garbled, but we are still twirling it around.......I just wanted ya to know "LISTENING!!!!!!!!!!!!"  Wow.  And thanks for the input Smiley

everything i ever went through regarding ch has to do with some kind of manipulation of o2 circulation and/or manipulation within my inner workings (oy).  anyhow, i notice that i have issues involving blood circulation at certain times.  Even though i am a strong and healthy person, there are underlying variables that become noticeable at times of trauma?  Hope this is makingsense (prolly not).

Makes me wonder about the cigg smoking.  Why so many smokers (ciggs affect oxygen levels in the body)  Also the familiar use of caffeine.  Every time i ever went through any type of physical trauma at all - DIRECT affect on blood and oxygen circulation..............swelling and lack of circulation noticebly INCREASED - i'm even remembering the time i came down with "5th disease?"  My feet swelled up so bad could not walk....

Okay so i'm no scientist and i stink at research, but i truly feel that this subject is WAY RELEVANT!!!!

"some kind of manipulation of o2 circulation "

it would explain why vigorous exercise at onset is an effective abortive for some.

I agree vig. It would explain a lot, but as usual with this insidious disease, would not explain all, especially when you consider that it seems to be found in less than half of CH patients.

Still, it makes you want to go get an ultrasound to see if you've got that "small hole", and I can't help but wonder how hard it is for them to close it.

Kim, you may very well be on to something. The smoking sounds especially relevant. And I think that each one of us is the best judge of our own bodies. I know we need to listen to the doctors, but in the final analysis, I feel we should weigh their advice with our own intuition.

Interesting stuff.

Would this show up on an ECG (US-EKG)? After all many of us have these quite regularly through the verapamil regime.

I could be wrong(wouldn't be the first time, nor the last), but the way I read it- they found evidence of PFO in 17 of 40 CH patients. That's a little less than half, but still significant because "Having a cluster headache more than tripled the odds of having a PFO."

17 out of 40 is pretty eye opening.  I'd be interested to know what percentage of those 17 would get relief from oxygen the way a lot of us do.

Um, WHAT HAVE I BEEN SAYING THE PAST FOUR YEARS?

Do I need to go back and find all of the posts?
I've thought all along that the head is merely suffering the symptom of a problem elsewhere, most likely the heart. I even talked about my theory with KOP and Cathi in Nashville.

I have a 4 year daughter.  After birth it was discovered that she had a missing heart valve.  It is used to seperate oxgeniated blood from non oxgeniated blood. She had ben through two heart surgeries with one more to go, very soon. Her inception came  one year after my first attack of CH.  I hope I did not pass this on to her.

Hmmm interesting.  I don't have a hole, I do have a very mild mitral and triscupid valve regurgitation though, along with coronary artery spasms.  My son also has a congenital mitral valve prolapse, although very mild as well.
