Help needed with that fucking XP SP2

Since I installed SP 2 on my Windows XP setup I can't any longer access the internet Sad

The LAN network (connection to the cable modem) is reported as set up correctly and the IP address is ok.
But 4 browsers and numerous programs able of internet updates (AdAware, AntiVir, etc) can not connect to the LAN. Only ZoneAlarm reports the usual hacker attacks and port scans (I have disabled the Windows firewall).

Another question: Should I have installed SP 1 before SP 2 ?

Yet another one: How do I switch off the animation when opening or closing a prog in the systray? I managed to disable this "feature" (for me an annoying bug) in all others places but the systray.

Help in advance for all helpful suggestions,

My daughter hit the 'go' key when SP2 downloaded on her rig... grrrr...

Anyway... exactly the same issue.  I had to fully uninstall ZoneAlarm.  That did the trick.  We have not reloaded it yet.

Have to go with Rock on this one.  SP2 has a firewall and antivirus built in.  Turn it off or turn off the one you bought and try again.  Had a problem with my system crashing after installing SP2 because there was a confilct with Norton IS04 and SP2's firewall.  I ditched the MS one, cuz I had just paid $40 for the Norton.

Yeah... I get the impression that SP2 stomps on one of the hooks that ZoneAlarm (or any other ISV firewall) has in the IP stack.

Just disabling ZA did nothing.  I had to fully uninstall it.

I installed SP2 a few weeks ago.  I did delete ZoneAlarm before I installed SP2 though.  I run a wireless router with NAT firewall and run the Windows firewall.  So far, so good, no hacks and no conflicts.  My Norton Corporate Edition works fine but Windows doesn't recognize it for automatic updates so I manually update every week.

In theory......... SP2 is supposed to include everything from SP1 so you shouldn't have to install SP1 first. I have set up many new systems now and installed SP2 without starting with SP1 and had no problems.

Do yourself a favor though. Turn off the piece of crap firewall that is included with SP2 and use something else if you can.

Zone alarm has known issues with SP2 but they have issued an update to fix it (ZoneLabs).  Uninstall Zone Alarm and install the latest version.

SP2 has all the updates that were in in SP1.

I fixed the problem.
On the ZoneLab web site it says: "Version 5 or later are compatible with XP SP 2". This obviously means that older versions are incompatible, LOL. So I downloaded the newest ZoneAlarm, and of course, their are about 50 more settings to fiddle with than in the older version I used up to now (how I love *progress* Sad).

Thanks to all for their suggestions. Smiley

Pretty unbelievable that our Aging Scion of physics, relativity and Snake Oil can't easily load a service pack without the help of a bunch of unrepentant sinners.
