Rats. Sorry to hear about that. I can't get one in my town. Too Young! I have to be 65 or no shot. On the bright side, I haven't had a flu since 1974. Lots of Alka Seltzer Plus and hunker down in front of some bad TV. Charlie

We got shouting and shoving in long lines to get shots. People sit all day and play cards waiting. Grammy says she'll bring the heavy purse but I can't wait ALL DAY in line to take her. At 95, she's gonna have to just get tough this season. Kevin M

| My mom and sister got the shot as they are high risk; I gotta pass to give the high risk people a chance. Sambucol (elderberry extract) is better than Sambuca for taking the edge off the flu. In addition to elderberry, I'll be washing my hands frequently, taking zinc lozenges when symptoms pop up, along with real licorice. Licorice has broad spectrum anti-viral properties and is good for short term use (long term licorice use can cause bloating and blood pressure problems). Most of the "licorice" flavoring in food products is from anise, which has no recognized anti-viral properties. Quote:J Altern Complement Med. 1995 Winter;1(4):361-9. Inhibition of several strains of influenza virus in vitro and reduction of symptoms by an elderberry extract (Sambucus nigra L.) during an outbreak of influenza B Panama. Zakay-Rones Z, Varsano N, Zlotnik M, Manor O, Regev L, Schlesinger M, Mumcuoglu M. Department of Virology, Hebrew University-Hadassah Medical School, Jerusalem, Israel. A standardized elderberry extract, Sambucol (SAM), reduced hemagglutination and inhibited replication of human influenza viruses type A/Shangdong 9/93 (H3N2), A/Beijing 32/92 (H3N2), A/Texas 36/91 (H1N1), A/Singapore 6/86 (H1N1), type B/Panama 45/90, B/Yamagata 16/88, B/Ann Arbor 1/86, and of animal strains from Northern European swine and turkeys, A/Sw/Ger 2/81, A/Tur/Ger 3/91, and A/Sw/Ger 8533/91 in Madin-Darby canine kidney cells. A placebo-controlled, double blind study was carried out on a group of individuals living in an agricultural community (kibbutz) during an outbreak of influenza B/Panama in 1993. Fever, feeling of improvement, and complete cure were recorded during 6 days. Sera obtained in the acute and convalescent phases were tested for the presence of antibodies to influenza A, B, respiratory syncytial, and adenoviruses. Convalescent phase serologies showed higher mean and mean geometric hemagglutination inhibition (HI) titers to influenza B in the group treated with SAM than in the control group. A significant improvement of the symptoms, including fever, was seen in 93.3% of the cases in the SAM-treated group within 2 days, whereas in the control group 91.7% of the patients showed an improvement within 6 days (p < 0.001). A complete cure was achieved within 2 to 3 days in nearly 90% of the SAM-treated group and within at least 6 days in the placebo group (p < 0.001). No satisfactory medication to cure influenza type A and B is available. Considering the efficacy of the extract in vitro on all strains of influenza virus tested, the clinical results, its low cost, and absence of side-effects, this preparation could offer a possibility for safe treatment for influenza A and B. |
| Quote: Isr Med Assoc J. 2002 Nov;4(11 Suppl):919-22. The effect of herbal remedies on the production of human inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines. Barak V, Birkenfeld S, Halperin T, Kalickman I. Immunology Laboratory for Tumor Diagnosis, Department of Oncology, Hadassah University Hospital, Jerusalem, Israel. barak845@yahoo.com BACKGROUND: Some herbal remedies are sold as food additives and are believed to have immune-enhancing properties. OBJECTIVES: To study the effect of five herbal remedies--Sambucol Black Elderberry Extract, Sambucol Active Defense Formula and Sambucol for Kids (with known antiviral properties), Protec and Chizukit N (containing propolis and Echinacea, claimed to be immune enhancers)--on the production of cytokines, one of the main components of the immune system. METHODS: The production of four inflammatory cytokines (interleukin-1 beta, tumor necrosis factor alpha, and IL-6 and IL-8) and one anti-inflammatory cytokine (IL-10) was tested using blood-derived monocytes from 12 healthy donors. RESULTS: The Sambucol preparations increased the production of five cytokines (1.3-6.2 fold) compared to the control. Protec induced only a moderate production of IL-8 (1.6 fold) and IL-10 (2.3 fold) while Chizukit N caused only a moderate increase in IL-10 production (1.4 fold). Both Protec and Chizukit N caused moderate decreases in IL-1 beta, TNF alpha and IL-6 production. Lipopolysaccharide, a known activator of monocytes, induced the highest levels of cytokine production (3.6-10.7 fold). CONCLUSIONS: The three Sambucol formulations activate the healthy immune system by increasing inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines production, while the effect of Protec and Chizukit N is much less. Sambucol could therefore have immunostimulatory properties when administered to patients suffering from influenza (as shown before), or immunodepressed cancer or AIDS patients who are receiving chemotherapy or other treatments. |

I can't get one...mililtary has first priority, and when they have all gotten theirs, they move to the next rung and then the next etc. By the time the average person is ready there are no shots left. Floridian, does that mean I can eat lots of elderberry pie? hehe. Zinc has always worked well. Didn't know about the licorice though, have to invest in that. Cat

Never have gotten a flu shot and never will. I don't believe in the things. I used to get the flu once a year until I moved out here to the country, now I've been flu free for almost 7 years. Also, I made it a point to carry some hand sanitizer in my purse that I use frequently during the flu season, especially after shopping. Sorry to hear your sick Sean, feel good vibes to ya! mel

1400+ in this office complex. Majority cannot get the shot. We've had 10 on this floor get some form of flu already, and most of them have been gone for 3 - 5 days. More adding to the list daily.

I work for the office of public health and i won't get one, we only got in 500 doses to start off when we usually get 2000. Gonna be a bad year. Wash your hands, lots. If you feel sick stay home. This is not gonna be good but we will get through it as always. No one to blame, flu vaccine is diffucult to make. Take Paul Harvey's thought, stop shaking hands and slaute!

From what i understand producing the flu vaccination is a long and tedious process involving chicken eggs It is also not very profitable bizzness and evidently out of the four vaccination companies in existence for us, 2 went out of bizzness and one had a contamination issue. So, currently only one company is providing the vaccination. I've never been flu vaccinized and don't have plans to start. I'm young and healthy and don't see any reason to. For the very young and the elderly it mite be a good idea. Panick is bad for yer health.

| They need to develop and test a new vaccine every year. Whatever doesn't get used is thrown away at the end of the year. Leads to a market failure - no real incentive for new companies to enter that niche and compete. If this is a really bad flu season, I predict that there will be a government program to overcome the market failure - government will put out contracts with 4 companies to produce vaccine, and buy a certain amount regardless of the demand. That would be inneficient - just like any insurance ... pay more for a service you hope you don't need, but might. Up til now, we haven't seen a need.

kimh has it right, it is a long slow process using eggs. Sadly the vaccine developed by Chiron Corp ended up contaminated. This has never happened on this scale before, bet their Quality Control section is looking for a job. Also sad to say that flu vaccine production is not very profitable. The Centers for Disease Control and the federal govt are searching for more vaccine, some of it will come from Aventis/Pasteur, and possibly some other small producers worldwide. There is no one flu vaccine produced each year. Every year it is a different mix. Worldwide trends are analyized and the next years order is made in the fall. Not very effective but usually works fairly well. Last years vaccine was only 70% effective, one type slipped thru. It is not a cut and dried science. There should be a bit more vaccine in 4 to 7 weeks. the main flu season here in the south is Jan. and Feb. To protect yourself go to www.cdc.gov and there will be links to self protection, and prevention. One other alternative is FluMIst, a live virus vaccine, however this can be taken ONLY by healthy people from ages 5 to 50, (and make damn sure you dont go around anyone that is immunecomprimised!) Hope this helps.
