NHL Opening Night
« on: Oct 13th, 2004, 11:23pm »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

Tonight was the scheduled NHL Opening Night.

Who is affected the most by the lockout?

a. players
b. owners
c. fans

My vote is C.    Cry

When will the games resume?

a.  January
b.  Next season
c.  With replacement players

My prediction is C again.  Cry

The greedy bast****!!! Both owners and players, but I believe a salary cap will have to be in effect for the league to succeed financially.

I might vote for D.
For all of the people who depend on the income that the games provide. The concession people, parking lot attendants, security people, bars and restaurants etc.

I'll say B.
I think the players union will eventually come around once they realize that the money they want just isn't there.

Shoot, bring on the replacement players...at least it's hockey  Wink

DING DING DING!!!     We have a winner!

Great answer Jim

I'm not sure about how accessible other levels of hockey are for any of the fans down there.    Get out and watch local college games, kids, etc...    (if ya can).

Well... I'm happy to say that my Habs won their first game against the Senators yesterday night but... it was only in my dream Sad

I'm sad...

I'll say C for the first question and A for the second.

Let's hope they solve the situation for good and for a long time Smiley

I would say C. Cocessions, etc, most arenas have other things scheduled as well, however a lot of people that work directly for the differnt teams have been layed off, so it might be D as well.

When will they resume the season. I have to say B, next season.

Well it gives me a chance to go watch the Atlantic City Bullies more often (Kelly Cup winners in '03 BTW)

Ok, have it on good authority, I work with a owners family member.  The owners didn't want to do this, this owner in particular knew it would be bad for the game.  Players weren't budging on their side, owners on theirs.  I would love to see this end, because I think this could lead to the demise of the sport in the US.  Hope things get worked out soon.  When I hear more info I will post.

No hockey - bad. Me love hockey... That said, the lockout was inevitable. The replacement players would come from the lower leagues. I can't see them killing thier farm teams(AHL etc.) Up here in Oiler country the Oiler brass did a real smart thing. They moved our farm team from the American Hockey League here to Edmonton for the duration of the lockout. Good hockey from hungry players wanting to prove themselves.

Nice Drawing Glen... I never saw that one... way too cool Cool

I was listening to a TV show yesterday nights and some journalists were saying that Gretzy or Lemieux should lead the discussions between owners and players... That, since there's no talk between Betman and Goodnow...

What do you think... good or bad idea?

I think the salary cap is a must but 31 M$ is maybe not enough...

Betman can go take a flying leap...has done nothing to help the sport.  Loved it when he wanted to do away with the Blue Line and the Red Line because his ADHD kid couldn't sit still for more than 2 seconds during a game.  Have to side with Cheli on that one, "If someone took a shot at Betman, no one would really care."  Said during the last strike, while he was still with the 'Hawks, IIRC.

Thanks Pegase and JDH. Gretzky was traded 16 years ago and retired 5 years ago and Edmonton still hasn't really gotten over that trade. Cry  I watched the Oilers/Flyers Stanley Cup game seven a couple of weeks ago. Wide open hockey. It was a beautiful thing.  Undecided

I don't think $31m will cut it either.  Teams like Detroit and Dallas would have to cut their salaries almost in half.

I wish a farm team would come to Dallas during the lockout.

At least we have high school football.  Tonight ESPN2 Texas high school football game nationwide coverage.  8 miles from my place is stadium.

Pegase,
Actually the official Dutch national sport is sticking fingers in the dikes Tongue
Damn I wish I knew how to get the right flag up there. It should be the ST. Maarten flag. St. Marten is part of the Netherland Antilles (but not for long)
I am Caribbean boy that saw snow for the first time at 26 so winter sports don't do much for me.
I always thought those knife like things they put on their feet were some form of handicapping system so they didn't kill each other.

Hey Phil,
Yea I heard you got 1 week of spring 2 weeks of summer 1 week of fall and 11 months of winter.
I'll be thinking of you in January when I'm out fishing in my shorts and tee shirt.
Why is St. Maarten leaving the Netherland Antilles?
In simple terms, Little sister needs to leave the nest to grow.
