even better www.linux.org IE cannot be uninstalled easily, if you are trapped on the AOL train, try hard to find the brake cord so you can get off. AOL's bloatware uses IE which is funny because they own Netscape and aren't smart enough to use it. Someday someone will find a practical use for those Cd's that come in the mail, until then I will keep the cases ( the last one was a wood hinged box) and throw the disks away. Ree, Sorry I can't help, except go to MS site, and download the IE installer and get the latest, then get the patches. If that doesn't work I'll send you a copy of SUSE/Novel 9.1 personal addition, it should have winmodem support better than winXP but you will have to get a real ISP. Opus/Paul

Isn't there an IE setup app on the AOL disks? You should be able to install it back with that. Or you can get IE6 SP1 from the Micro$oft website Not 100% certain if you need to install anything else though, because I haven't been lucky enough to get IE to go away on my system. PFDAN................................ Drk^Angel P.S. You could also try going to 'Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs > Add/Remove Windows Components' and see if it gives you the option to reinstall it. DA

| You got that right, Drk. I haven't looked back. Ree, go to msn.com and make sure you can get it before you uninstall. Better yet, go to http://mozilla.org. and download Firefox. Then get rid of AOL and IE. You won't regret it. pd

Ree, What are the issues you are having with ie? If you will go to add/delete programs in control panel and select ie to remove it will then give you a prompt to either remove or repair....well, depends upon what version you are using, i believe. Try it and see if a repair option shows up. If not, let us know. What version of ie are you using? version of os? good luck renee

Ree, my two penny's worth. I have it on good faith that on a windows machine IE opens your computer right up to anybody that wants a look. a bit worrying if you have EVER bought something over the internet. I agree, firefox, mozilla or opera. that's the way forward. Firefox is the nicest to use. James

Gawd... I HATE being put in the position of defending the evil empire, but you guys need to get a grip... First of all, a lot of users are switching to non-IE browsers. The latest market share numbers indicate that IE has slipped from 95% market share to a pathetic 94%. That's 94 out of 100 for those of you who don't understand math. Secondly, to imply that IE automatically opens up your computer for the world to see... well that's sheer nonsense. Look, the bottom line is this... any operating system that holds over 90% market share is going to get at least 90% of the attention from hackers, so it stands to reason that you'll see exploits released on a regular basis. The updates you get for Windows don't come any faster or more often than for Linux systems, they just affect more people and make more news. I have several Linux and BSD systems that I update *constantly*, but that's just a fact of life. Furthermore, to suggest to *average* users to install a linux OS... well, that's a can of worms. Most of the users who have been fed all of the FEAR around windows and have the desire to 'switch' are nowhere near the capability to deal with an OS that has things like RPMs and such to update it. Only a few of the linux OS's have anything like an automatic update system (Redhat is cool) but most require pretty advanced knowledge and awareness of when/how to update. It is not the kind of thing to drop on the average end user. If you keep IE and Windows up to date, you should be fine. Of course, you want/need to run additional software like a personal firewall and virus scanner, and maybe a spyware sweeper like X-Cleaner on a regular basis. None of my Windows systems have been compromised in the last 5 years. Several of my linux OS's have been hacked, but that's because I failed to understand the impact of installing certain packages and failed to do DAILY searches for updates for them. There's just no need to constantly throw Windows under the bus when, for the most part, the hacked Windows systems are due to lack of diligence on the user's part. We'll never have a 'secure' OS. We need security-aware users. -Shawn

OK. Grab yer towel and DON'T PANIC. Just install the latest version of Mozilla (the mother of all browsers) AOL gets along with it famously. They even give Mozilla a few million dollers (US) a year. Just don't use IE as your default web browser. Ever. You can acquire Mozilla from the secret site http://mozilla.org Just leave out the WWW when you type in the address and you'll go rite there. Handy huh. If you still need yer AOL e-mail etc. and wish to stop all this nonsense. Take Paul up on his offer of a SuSE Linux install. Hell I still talk to folks on AOL and I don't really know how to use Microsoft windows. AOL fergets to mention that you don't need AOL or IE to use their e-mail or messenging service. Well I don't anyway. Too complicated and I might spill my beer. YMMV Kirk (Too stupid to use MS)

Hya Ree, Older version of IE can be found...for free.... For Win9X {95 & 98} look here, for NT and later look here Download it to your desktop and run it from there. Then you can (gasp) update it if needed. Let me know if you have trouble. Safe surfing, Mark

| Actually the small increase in alternate browsers came after CERT basically declared IE a risk to national security. Sorry, can't find the link, and CERT is to full of IE exploits to look there. on Oct 7th, 2004, 11:15am, fubar wrote: Look, the bottom line is this... any operating system that holds over 90% market share is going to get at least 90% of the attention from hackers, |

| Have you used any modern Linux distro lately? On the ones I use you put in a CD or DVD and it ask you if you want to play it and does, plug a camera into it and a folder pops up with your pictures in it. SUSE has even gotten better than Redhat/fedora. Want to install a new program, download the RPM even a source code or one from another distro, click on it, you are asked for your root password and the program installs. Yes there are dependence problems sometimes and you can't install, but even windows has that problem. Also there are are programs that come in a tarball, like a zip file in windows, you unpack, click on the install file and everything is done for you. And to top it off, it runs well on a PII. For me, the choice to use Linux was because I wanted to be able do things that I could not in Windows, Now it's because I'm lazy and don't want to fight my computer anymore. It looks like SUSE is the winner for the easy to use and install Linux for the average user. With the amount of email I get from people asking how to fix problems they are having with WinXP it looks like Microsoft has yet to produce a product that the average user can work with problem free. And FYI I can't help these people because WinXP is beyond my understanding. on Oct 7th, 2004, 11:15am, fubar wrote: None of my Windows systems have been compromised in the last 5 years. | Wow, that's bad, I assume you don't run in root, always use strong passwords, and use the delay after 3 password failures to limit dictionary attacks. Fortunately for the average, user Linux comes with most services turned off, and a tight firewall. Yes any system can be cracked. I also consider a computer with spyware running a compromised system.
