Either Footloose or Bang Your Head by Quiet Riot off the Mental Health album. That is my rendition of the 80's.

Cats in the Cradle by Harry Chapin ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -------- A child arrived just the other day, He came to the world in the usual way. But there were planes to catch, and bills to pay. He learned to walk while I was away. And he was talking 'fore I knew it, and as he grew, He'd say, "I'm gonna be like you, dad. You know I'm gonna be like you." And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon, Little boy blue and the man in the moon. "When you coming home, dad?" "I don't know when, But we'll get together then. You know we'll have a good time then." My son turned ten just the other day. He said, "Thanks for the ball, dad, come on let's play. Can you teach me to throw?" I said, "Not today, I got a lot to do." He said, "That's ok." And he walked away, but his smile never dimmed, Said, "I'm gonna be like him, yeah. You know I'm gonna be like him." And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon, Little boy blue and the man in the moon. "When you coming home, dad?" "I don't know when, But we'll get together then. You know we'll have a good time then." Well, he came from college just the other day, So much like a man I just had to say, "Son, I'm proud of you. Can you sit for a while?" He shook his head, and he said with a smile, "What I'd really like, dad, is to borrow the car keys. See you later. Can I have them please?" And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon, Little boy blue and the man in the moon. "When you coming home, son?" "I don't know when, But we'll get together then, dad. You know we'll have a good time then." I've long since retired and my son's moved away. I called him up just the other day. I said, "I'd like to see you if you don't mind." He said, "I'd love to, dad, if I could find the time. You see, my new job's a hassle, and the kid's got the flu, But it's sure nice talking to you, dad. It's been sure nice talking to you." And as I hung up the phone, it occurred to me, He'd grown up just like me. My boy was just like me. And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon, Little boy blue and the man in the moon. "When you coming home, son?" "I don't know when, But we'll get together then, dad. You know we'll have a good time then." Seems to me this defines the stress of bringing home the paycheck... having a mercedes and not having enough time for what is real in life..... Then when all is said and done... wondering where your kids are when your older and suddenly have time for them.~~ree

"I'm walking on sunshine" by ???????? that song instantaniously puts me in a great mood and it takes me back.......dancing in the disco's in my home town in engalnd. Dancing in a circle (with all our handbags piled in the middle like a shrine) with other girls with ridiculously high hair doo's and massive floresant hooped earings. Nasty white stiletto shoes on and asking each other "Is he looking at me, is he????" Yes, I was cool.

Katrina & The Waves, Jayne! I was going to say that for the 80's, but then I kept thinking of new bands and songs and left it blank, but seriously, that's one of the first songs that came to mind.

Too easy ... although I've always thought I could never now write my own song describing my life as it's already been done: Supertramp Breakfast in America (1979) The Logical Song When I was young, it seemed that life was so wonderful, a miracle, oh it was beautiful, magical. And all the birds in the trees, well they'd be singing so happily, joyfully, playfully watching me. But then they send me away to teach me how to be sensible, logical, responsible, practical. And they showed me a world where I could be so dependable, clinical, intellectual, cynical. There are times when all the world's asleep, the questions run too deep for such a simple man. Won't you please, please tell me what we've learned I know it sounds absurd but please tell me who I am. Now watch what you say or they'll be calling you a radical, liberal, fanatical, criminal. Won't you sign up your name, we'd like to feel you're acceptable, respectable, presentable, a vegtable! At night, when all the world's asleep, the questions run so deep for such a simple man. Won't you please, please tell me what we've learned I know it sounds absurd but please tell me who I am. Dave

Well hmmmm when I was very little (early 80s) I remember listening to a lot of Michael Jackson (back when he was black!), Lionel Ritchie, Huey Lewis and people like that. That's what my parents listened to. When I graduated from high school in 1999, our theme song was "We Didn't Start the Fire" by Billy Joel. I'm honestly not sure what that says about my generation and our propensity for accepting responsibility, but hey...who cares. I got to make a fun speech tying present day life to that song in some way. Don't ask me. I got a copy of it laying around somewhere at home. What song defines Generation X? I'm afraid to ask really! Though i believe my generation is yet to be defined the best answer i can come up right now is James' "Someone Got it in for Me". PFDAN to all, Perry. P.S.: on Sep 23rd, 2004, 3:50pm, Lizzie2 wrote: What song defines Generation X? I'm afraid to ask really! L2 |
