Hi guys, Thought I might ask some of you this because I'm a little concerned. As of the middle of August I noticed my clothes were a little loose. I payed no attention and went down the belt a hole. I recently weighed myself as of Monday I was 184 from 205. I thought wow where did I lose 21 pounds. Well today being Wednesday I lost another 2, down to 182. This does not seem normal to me, does it you? I have changed nothing in my life at all. I feel fine, nothing hurts, why the weight loss so quickly? I called the doc today and he said to call Monday with my weight. Let me know what you think, its kinda important to me. Thanks Sean.......................

I'm with you guys, something definately isn't right here. I found this on the net, check it out. Subject: Extreme weight loss Topic Area: Gastroenterology - General Forum: The Gastroenterology and Liver Diseases Forum Question Posted By: Teresa on Thursday, September 03, 1998 Hello, My mother has experienced severe weight loss since February of this year, dropping from 170 pounds to 125 pounds. She is about 5`7. She has undergone several tests--ultrasounds (upper lower), gastroscopy, barium enema, lower GI, and xrays. Her doctor did find evidence of h.pylori, and she was treated for this problem. Her weight loss, however, continued. She does not feel pain, but explains that the food that she eats causes her discomfort, that it just sits at the bottom of her stomach. She does not complain of heartburn, she does not feel nausea or want vomit. Her bowel movements are normal. She has cut back her food intake dramatically in these months, and now eats very little. She is afraid to eat food that is not mashed, as she thinks that it will be more easily digested. She has been drinking Ensure. She is being treated for depression with serzone. She has been on serzone for about 6 weeks (now at 400mg/day), and before that, she was taking sinequan, but at a very low dosage (20mg/day). She also takes small doses of predinisone (5mg every 3 days) for polymyalgia, estrogen, and ativan (for anxiety). She was diagnosed with another depression 28 years ago, and at that time, she lost the same amout of weight. She notes that 28 years ago, however, she had no apetite, while she feels that she CANNOT eat now (even if she had an appetite). She also complains of pain in her lower right- hand quadrant, and feels a lump (the size of a kidney) there. A radiologist told her that it was likely her kidney that she feels as she is very thin. Do you think that the weight loss, and her difficulties in eating are connected to her depression? Could there be a physical reason that the doctors have missed? Her gastro-intestinal specialist asked her to do a CAT-scan, but she is afraid that she is allergic to the dye? Is this a useful test? What happens if patients are allergic to the dye? We want to help stop the weight loss and help her feel better, but we are not sure what to do, other than encourage her to eat and help her through the depression. We are afraid that her weight is getting dangerously low--what IS a dangerous weight for a woman her height? Please help. _____________ Dear Teresa: Causes of weight loss are too numerous to list. With the brief medical history provided in your email, it is very possible that your mother’s weight loss may be due her severe depression, especially since she had weight loss and depression when she was younger. However, it is necessary to exclude other treatable causes of her weight loss before attributing her weight loss solely to her depression. First of all, malabsorption (the small intestines not absorbing the nutrients due to various conditions) should be considered. Upper endoscopy with small bowel biopsy will determine if this is apossible explanation. A second possible cause is occult malignancy such as pancreatic cancer, ovarian cancer and lymphoma, to name a few. A CT scan of the abdomen is necessary to exclude these possibilities. In patients who have allergic reactions to the contrast dye, corticosteroids and anti-histamines administered before the dye can prevent problems. Other possible explanations for the weight loss include gastroparesis and mesenteric ischemia ( a condition in which the intestine has an inadequate blood supply when it is working during digestion. Patients have severe pain with eating and subconsciously restrict food intake in order to prevent the pain. After a while they forget about the pain and the only symptom is weight loss. Your mother is now underweight. I suggest that you discuss with your physician nutritional supplements. This information is presented for educational purposes only. Always ask specific medical questions to your personal physician. We would be happy to see your mother at Henry Ford Health System, Division of Gastroenterology. Call pour Physician Referral Line at (800) 656-6580 and request an appointment with Dr, Muszkat, one of our experts in nutritional disorders. HFHSM.D.-rf *keywords: weight loss, 0.4 Nothing here sounds too fun you think? I think we can rule out deppression, I don't feel deppressed. Sean, you haven't pissed off any gypsies lately, right? (Stephen King's "Thinner," reference...) Anyway... You've already contacted your physician. I'm sure s/he is going to pull you in for a battery of tests. Let us know what turns up. I'll be keeping you in my thoughts, my friend. -Frank

Maybe I'm blowing this out of proportion, I should just have the doc probe me. Thing that scares me is I've been the same weight for 15 years plus or minus 3 pounds. I'll keep you posted guys, I appreciate the love. Sean...................

Sean, like they said, there are a million reasons for weight loss. Just make sure to see your doc, and make sure your doc finds out WHY. Don't let them do a few tests, send ya home, and forget about you, OK ???????? Keep us posted.

One of the things that the hypothalamus controls is weight gain/loss...... I fluctuate, but not to those extremes. Get to the doc.

That's a heck of a weight loss, and it has to be scarey, but it doesn't always have a bad ending. Thyroid is one issue, malabsorption, stress and ulcer are a few others. One thing I've learned for sure is that guessing is a waste of time and makes ones' blood pressure go up for nothing. Even docs don't guess......they do tests before they make fools out of themselves. Hope you ae OK and get a good report next week!!! Love and Prayers, Donna H.

Thanks for the everything guys, I have an appointment tommorrow at 10:30am. He seemed concerned but not alarmed, but wanted me to come today but I was pretty grungy and made it for the morning. Todays weigh in was 181 pounds bordering 180. Doesn't seem right to lose almost 2 pounds in a day but its happening. Still feel fine, although the worry is starting to show. Thanks for showing the love guys, I'm gonna spend the rest of the night with the wife and kids, I'll let you know what he says tommorrow. Sean...........................

Sean, Hope that it gets figured out and that it is nothing serious!! Very unusual to lose that much weight so fast, at least it seems to me! My weight changes a lot, but it is usually due to some drug of some sort. By earlier this summer, I had gained 30 pounds from last summer to this summer, but I had changed meds on and off. I had been eating less and gaining more and more. I forget what they wrote it up to in the end. No thyroid problems or anything like that. I wound up losing 9 pounds in 2 weeks when on zonegran for 2 weeks. Last summer I was underweight, and the nutritionist who came to see me in the ICU made me drink Boost shakes until I gained like 8 pounds or so. Yummmy.... Since then, can't kick the extra pounds!! Best of luck to you...let us know how it goes tomorrow!!! Lizzie

Just see the doctor, do the tests and hope for good things. It's easier to say don't worry when it's not me who is going through it. I just lost 25 lbs. but that was from extreme diet change, exercise, etc. I hope it turns out to be nothing out of the ordinary. Thinking about your results. STuey

| LMAO I don't look, I just make sure I don't see both his hands on my shoulders ......................not He weighed me in at 182.7, my scale at home says 181. He took blood and a chest x-ray, and will call me Monday with results. He also thinks it might be a thyroid issue but he won't know till the blood comes back. I did take Thomas's idea about the hypothalmus to him and he agreed its possible, but wants to take it one step at a time. All in all I feel good, hope my weight stays the same till Monday. Thanks for the ear Sean............
