Family I have a Prednisone question...
« on: Sep 21st, 2004, 9:01pm »

I need an answer fast on this as I see Pam in the morning, so I'm posting this here.   Last major go round I was on two different pred rounds but they were not at all correct from all I've read here.   Well I'm starting back into a major round here and I called Pam and she phoned in a script for a taper of pred for 14 days, as thus...

60mg-60-50-50-40-40-30-30-20-20-10-10-5-5 mg

Sound right to you?

She was going to also start me on Zonegran, but it's not indicated for people allegic to sulfa...which I am, (thank you internet, and it's in my chart that I'm allergic so I wonder why she suggested that anyway) so we have to find something else...lithium is out of the question due to the cost involved in the testing, (baseline ekg) and still on the trex to abort.

Any suggestions would be appreciated...and sorry O2 is not the list due to cost as well.  Already looked into that one.

Please input would be helpful...(and this timeing, with Mom in surgery tomorrow too is awful)

when it rains it pours

edit to add I'm back to upping the verap to 300 mg too after 4 days on the pred.

My opinion on prednisone is purely negative.
Find a way to not even take it.

I hope surgery goes well tomorrow.
I'll be with you in spirit Pegg.

I know all about the negative aspects of the pred...but I need the break, and hope to nip this thing in the bud...I have to work...I need an income...so another 3 months of hell is not an option if I can help it.

Hard enough dealing with the random attacks when at work....have this cycle ramp up where I'm spending more time locked away in the "dungeon" than I am at my desk is not gonna fly....

Pred seems to get things under control for a lot of people.   (for a lot, only temporarily)

I was on a 9 day taper just over a month ago.

50-50-50-50-50-25-25-25-25

It was near the end of my cycle, as far as I know, so it may have had a hand in ending the cycle --- maybe not.

I HAVE had success with it in the past (three times in the 80s and 90s)

I'm not allowed to do pred anymore...at least not very often.

It has caused early stage osteoporosis and possibly bone cell death in both knees as well as a host of other problems.

Based on the fact that I might now have to get dead bone cells cut from both knees, I think I will keep my clusters and skip the pred for now. Sad  Like Vig says...damned if we do, damned if we don't.

I get my MRI tomorrow so we'll see just how extensive the damage done is... <sigh>

In my experience, the negatives outweigh the positives by a sufficient margin to avoid the Prednisone.  In fact, I think it made me become chronic, but I cannot know that for sure.  I was episodic until I was put on Prednisone, then enjoyed 3 solid years of CH hell until I found fungus among us.  All hail the fungus.

It always seems like a good idea and saving grace at the time, eh?  The prednisone that is.  I always welcomed the few days relief or shadows or whatnot.  Now I'm kinda pissed that I did that to myself because of the consequences I have to pay back 10-fold.  Sad

Hi Redd,
If your total use of the pred is only 14 days, according to the research I've done (and that's quite a bit!) your taper is considered short term and safe.
That is the medical field's opinion, obviously I have reason to agree with Fubar and Carrie and can't help but be nervous for anyone taking Prednisone. If you've been on 60mg's or higher for any length of time before this taper, it could be a whole different story. I'm assuming you're starting at 60mg's and tapering immediately off in 14 days, in which case all information says you have nothing to worry about, especially since you've been on Pred before and know what to expect.
 Hope you feel better soon,
 Dave

The taper my neuro put me on was scheduled out on a chart. As in, not just how many mg per day, but when to take them. It worked very well.
3 or 4 days breakfast, lunch, dinner, bedtime, then 3 days at 60, 3 days at 40, 3 days at 20... But the dosage times were varied and changed every day or two. I don't remember what they were now, but I might be able to dig up the sheet if it would help.

Ditto what Svenn said, worked for me last cycle. Nasty side effects, but I thought the trade off was worth it ...
