So far, I can't seem to find help on why when I try to use my IE search, there is no place to do so. It's blank other than my tool bar and my gif. No place to put a url. WTF is this? Charlie

Charlie, Right click on the top of Internet Explorer where File, Edit, View etc are. You should see Address Bar...click that and it will bring up your address bar where you can type URL's. Jim

There is no 'IE search'. Do you mean your address bar, as Mel indicated? If you did have a bar up top that allowed you to search, then you had SPYWARE . Punch yourself in the nuts, n00b. To search, you can use my super secret technique. On the address bar, type www.google.com Share this only with your closest friends.

Thanks kids. The address bar is now checked but it didn't work. All I get is the tool bar and my gif. Nothing below the tool bar. No place to search. Granted that I don't use it much but this is a PITA. I wonder if this happened when I cleaned out most my temporary files? I try to save the good stuff. Rats. Charlie

Perfect. You are not supposed to get a 'search bar' below your tool bar. Any 'search bar' that I can think of is spyware. If you ran AdAware or such it probably whacked it.

I guess it's called the address bar. It's gone now. It isn't spyware. This is the thing that everybody uses. It's been there since I got my puter. I've used it many times. No place to drop in a a url or hit "go." Address: checked Toolbar: locked Place to search (where I drop in an address) gone Charlie

Charlie--The address bar is where the URL is typed [http:\\abc.com] and you say it is checked. Have you re-booted? Have you changed your desktop properties or resolution? Tom

| I'll have to look at this later. I have an MRI scheduled shortly. Nothing special, doc is gung ho lately. Waste of time really and I won't be back until dinnertime or so. I was looking around the other day and may have screwed up something at properties. I was just looking though....I thought. Thanks and I'll see yuz all later. Charlie

Charlie I know that new model is confusing, but you have to turn the knob...not the big shiny silver wheel, the little black knob to the right of that and you should be just fine (You can thank Svenn for that gem of a puter btw) Cat

I'm with Kirk. Another good solution is from http://www.opera.com/. It's about time to replace the browser from the last millennium. Ueli

Thanks for all the help folks. Kirk, Ueli and Co. I don't pay a lot of attention to other things like Opera because I'm not sure just how much or exactly it would entail. If I have to go all over the place and reregister, reset, and etc. I'm not sure. This stuff is second nature to most of you. It isn't for me. I'd be real happy to fix this thing. Rocking the boat when it comes to computers scares me. Charlie

The change over from IE to either Mozilla or Opera is pretty painless. You just download and execute the file, and answer some very easy questions. They are both that very rare commodity "userfriendly". They are also customizable as all get out for the power users out there. The default settings will do all the tasks you use pretty much the same way as IE. Although I must admit that Euli has nicer colors on his than me. TTFN

Sounds good but I have a lot of things I'm familiar with like passwords, IDs, registered stuff, images, all kinds of things. I don't know how this would affect things. The thing about computer stuff is that everything goes along fine and then wham. I'm asked to go or do stuff about which I have no idea. I get on line newspaper stuff, catalogs, ebay addresses all over the place, paypal...tons of things I don't want to have to redo.......I'm not sure any of this is relevant though. How about MSN? What would I have to do there...if anything? The whole thing is foreign to me. I've never considered it because of that. I wish I understood this stuff. Charlie

Thanks Jonny. I know opera is supposed to be better. I'd like it I guess but I'm not good at fooling around with this stuff. I don't want to screw it up. Scares me. I just don't want to get lost nor have I ever understood just what this stuff is. It's one of my least understood areas. Charlie

Downloading Opera will do nothing to your IE browser, all your shit will still be there. You can slowly transfer that stuff (At your own speed) to Opera.....if you want to. Opera is so much like IE you will get the hang of it in a day........or less. With Opera you will be able to surf PF and always be able to click on IE for anything you need. Its painless.......LMAO ...........................................jonny

OK: I'll look into it but I have some emails on this to answer and I'm suppose to call someone tomorrow. You're making it very tempting. It will have to be tomorrow. Fortunately, I don't use the search often. Probably not once a week. Thanks a lot kids. Charlie

Charlie, once you go to http://mozilla.org , download firefox. Like Kirk said, you answer a few easy questions, and it will transfer all your settings from IE to firefox. It's very easy, and you won't lose any info. I use it and it's one of the best browsers I've ever used.

You can even have Opera identify itself as IE to web servers if you like Charlie. It has no problem with lying to M$. Whats even better is that Microsoft can't tell its being lied to. My vote is still in for Mozilla's Firefox browser though. Since Jonny is in the same time zone as you, I would go with Opera. TTFN

SYMPTOMS The Address bar may be missing in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6. CAUSE This issue may occur if the Toolbar settings are set to remove the Address bar, or if there is a problem with a registry key. RESOLUTION To resolve this issue, change the Toolbar settings, or delete the WebBrowser registry key. Method 1: Change the Toolbar settings To change the Toolbar settings: Start Internet Explorer, click View and then point to Toolbars. If there is a check mark next to Address Bar, click Address Bar to remove the check mark. If the Address bar is in the upper right corner and not available, right-click Address, and then click Lock the Toolbar to remove the check mark. ClickAddress, and then drag the Address bar where you want it. If the problem is still not resolved, go to Method 2. Method 2: Delete the WebBrowser registry key Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk. To delete the WebBrowser registry key: Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK. Locate the following registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar Right-click the WebBrowser key, click Delete, and then click Yes. Open Internet Explorer, click View, and then point to Toolbars. The toolbar default settings are restored.
