Need Computer Help Update

Well, I turned off system restore and then downloaded the Free Trojan Hunter that Mark suggested. Then I ran my computer in safe mode and used the trojan hunter. Then it cleaned 4 trojans, and I restarted in normal mode. Now my computer isn't running right and I am unable to turn System Restore back on. It says that there are errors and I need to restart again. And then further, as soon as I restarted, McAfee found another infected file! That same aqadcup file infected with BDI trojan...so I guess it didn't work!! Next ideas?? LOL

| Besides being unable to turn System Restore back on, what isn't 'running right'? Can you be more specific? on Sep 21st, 2004, 10:22am, Lizzie2 wrote:...It says that there are errors and I need to restart again... |
| Next time, write down the error messages (or a screen-dump) and I'll see if I can help. grant To copy the screen, wait until the error message appears and: 1. press ALT and PrtScn 2. open Word (or Wordpad) and press SHIFT and INSERT 3. save the Word document 4. email me at gsamborn.ch@sasktel.net

OK I just restarted 3 times to follow directions for "Restart now in Normal Mode" The only error I got this time around is "Windows cannot open: wupdater.exe.tcf" Any ideas on that one? I'll let ya know if McAfee finds the trojan again...I dont' know what else to do to get rid of it!

Thanks. Actually that was one of the files picked up by the trojan hunter, but whatever I cleaned up using that program now makes my computer try to run it, and it can't. Do you know what other scan, cleanup, or repair programs I should run to get this thing back in working order? thanks!

If you haven't run AdAware, SpyBot, etc I'd recommend that. Note that they don't always catch everything. Next, I'd try to run a removal tool like the one at this link. http://www.2-spyware.com/file-wupdater-exe.html WARNING: I've never used anything from this company and there are a lot of 'companys' out there that say they remove spyware but are actually putting more on your system. PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK.

| It sounds like you deleted the file but there is still an entry in the registry that is trying to run it. Do you know any local computer geeks that can do some registry tweaks for a 6 pack? If you do, have them look at the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run key and see if there is anything in there that needs to be removed. Don't go there yourself unless you are VERY familiar with using the registry.

Actually... An easier method for removing a file from being executed on startup is to click Start... Choose Run... Type MSCONFIG in the text entry space and press enter... Click on the Startup tab... And uncheck any checkboxes that reference the file wupdater. Of course, if you're using WinXP... Windoze will bitch and moan the next time you restart your 'puter, but I think there's a check box on the warning that'll take care of it popping up again.
