What were you doing on 9-11??

This will forever be a question posed by future generations as well as amongst ourselves, much like "Where were you when Kennedy......"
I was teaching in a school for individuals with Autism.
We heard from the secretary and literally all of the teachers were in hysterics.
Try being amongst children who have no understanding of what has occured. (Actually a blessing)
Teachers crying, students disengaged from learning... Whatta mess. Trying to keep composure when we all knew people who were in the towers.
I lost a few people as did my fiance.
A day that will forever be remembered.

Brushing my daughters hair for school. The first tower had already been hit when I turned on the news. And woke up Shaun. Then while we where watching I saw the second plane hit the second tower. It was surreal.
The division Pres had the TV on in the conference room all day an allowed everyone who had family at any of the sites to use the phone as much as they could to make sure that everyone was ok.
Will never forget. Just like I wont foret when the shuttle exploded. We where watching it in class because my teacher had been on of the canditates and could have been on that flight.

I was on the phone to my vet that morning totally destraut with the final desicion I'd made to have him come put my beloved palimino horse down of owning over 14 years. They mention'd bein late cuz of the bombings.......huh I said ! Turned on my TV and thought I was watching a rerun of some sort of sci-fi movie.....didn't believe it was REAL at first. But then it was an unreal day anyhow Pam

It really was bizarre!!!
even though I was teaching out on Long Island, you could see the smoke and smell the burning.
Fighter jets flying over head and NO WAY to contact loved ones.

Kids were getting ready for school, and I was on the phone with my best friend Susie from highschool. The kids were talking about some crash and at first I figured they were seeing some new ad for some video game....till they said "No Mom..this is on the news" . So I went into the livingroom and started to watch, and I saw the reels of the towes being hit. I was agast and in total disbelief for about 2.2 seconds and then I got back to reality and tried to calm the kids down that this was happening a thousand miles away, and that they weren't in any danger to walk to school. I was scared to death, but that isn't something I could pass on to them, so I tried to make it as normal as possible. It was a catalist to many decisions made that were nescesary at the time, but had long lasting consequences, not all of them good.

My sister's birthday is tomorrrow. I sent her a card saying that although her BD will never be the same, to her family and friends it adds a silver lining to an otherwise dark date.
I was working in my office when one of the secretarys came in and told me that a plane had just crashed into one of the WTC buildings. We went into another office and watched TV as the second one hit. It wasn't till then that I realized it was a terroristic act. Like someone else said, it was surreal! Even though I didn't know anyone directly affected by this tragedy, it changed me and the way I look at life. I will never take freedom for granted again!

I was loading a semi where I work with a forklift. The truck driver told me about it. He said a plane had just crashed into one of the Twin Towers. I really didn't think too much about it at first. (didn't a plane crash into a skyscraper in the 50's? Can't remember the building) Anyway, about an hour later we had our coffee break and I went home quick like and turned on the tv. What I saw was beyond belief, unreal. I could go on and on but I would get off the topic. No, I will never forget where I was and what I was doing at the time. May god bless all those who lost their lives.

I was planning on cleaning up paperwork, hadn't looked at email yet and didn't see the news until after the fact. Caught up quickly and was glued.
It reminded me a bit of how we behaved after the Kennedy assassination. Until 9/11, that was my generation's Pearl Harbor.

I remember the absolutely crystal blue skies in NY state that day. It was a beautiful September day. The kids had just gone back to school, I was home with just my little one, barely over a year old. I had just stepped out of the shower when the phone rang.
Clark was calling me from the base (Fort Drum 10th Mountain Div.), he asked if I was watching CNN. I made some off the cuff remark that "duh, I have a 1 year old at home, Sesame Street maybe, CNN?? No!". He said go turn it on, someone just flew a plane into the WTC. Then he said "Oh My God, did you see that??" It didn't sink in, I was standing in a towel and told him I'd call him back. I got dressed, went downstairs and turned the TV to CNN. The OMG was because he was watching the 2nd plane hit the 2nd tower.
I called him back and we talked a bit, he was in military mode so I didn't get to talk to him long. Then I sat riveted to the television, and watched as a 3rd plane (initially thought to be a helicopter) crashed into the pentagon. I knew better than to try and call Clark on the base, so I sent him an email that said "Should I be getting scared now?" He replied with one word - "Yes"
At 1:00 p.m. he pulled up in front of the house. All the fear of that day deepened 10 fold because I knew there was only one reason he was home. He quietly loaded all his mobility gear into the back of his car and kissed me deeply and wiped away my tears, then kissed his son of only a year, and said "I don't know when I'll be home again" I had a million questions, and knew that he could answer none of them. I told him to call the first chance he got.
As I watched him drive away I was mixed with a sense of terrible grief and fear because I truly did not know when I would see him again, or IF I would see him again. But more than that, I held a sense of pride that carried me through that dark day.
The skies were very blue that day, and without a cloud in the NY sky, the rain of a million tears fell upon us...

I was working on Grounds Crew at grad school just outside Boston. We were getting ready to mow when the campus police officer told us that someone flew a plane into the WTC. We didn't think much of it, as he made it sound like it was a small plane and an acident or something. I don't think he had seen the news...
Anyway, about an hour later my wife found me on campus (she worked there), she walked up and was crying almost uncontrollably. She told me what had happened, and that they had set up televisions all over campus. When I saw the footage I was devastated. Sarah and I cried for days...
Cat - I can't imagine what you felt as your husband drove away, that must have be really difficult.

I was in my dorm room sleeping and my room mate comes running in the room screaming about someone running a plane into one of the towers. I ignored him at first, thinking he was just pulling my leg and then started to drift back asleep. He then turned on the TV. This woke me immediatly. No more than a couple of minutes passed and I watched the 2nd plane hit the 2nd tower. It was unreal to say the least. I will never forget that dreadful day.

I was getting ready to leave to visit sick children at the "Home of the Innocents" in Louisville. A class from IU had to meet there on that morning.
As I was driving over there ... the gas stations were full and lined down the street. I saw one man loading a shotgun into the trunk of his car. Everyone I saw was talking about it.
I'll never forget that day

Cat, your post was awesome, sis....Your words touched me in such a special way this morning....I felt the love and compassion I felt on 9/11 when I read your post....Never have I felt such love and friendship as I felt right after 9/11 on this message board...It was strange how 9/11 affected people here. Noone was fighting anymore. All the anger people felt at each other disappeared. Strange how tragedy affects us, isn't it? Wouldn't it be nice if we could all get along like that all the time? I miss the love I felt after 9/11....It was a shame that it took such a tragedy to bring out what we all felt in our hearts all the time though....That day of fear brought this board closer than I have ever seen it....May we always remember the Love we have in our hearts for each other here and put all differences aside....God bless you all today and everyday! smiles, nancyc

I was at work when we heard of the (first) plane hitting the tower. A little later I was on the phone with a vendor in New Jersey, when she told me of the second plane crash. My heart stopped and sank. There was no way this could be a coincidence. Discussions of Bin Laden popped up at work. Then, while I was on the phone with another vendor in Pennsyvania, she told me of the Pentagon hit. Christ, what was happening???
We turned on the radios to 3 diiferent news channels. The phone stopped ringing. We just listened... When I went home for lunch and turned on the news, I was shocked. I couldn't believe it. What the hell was going on? My sister had just been in the trade center the day before... We couldn't reach her. The rest of the day was spent worrying and in fear. When I went home, there were lines at all the gas stations... and some were doing some major price gouging. My sister called and was ok. I was glued to the news for days. I will never forget it.

I was in Boston trying to open a restaurant for my former employer. About three blocks down from the Westin hotel the FBI and ATF raided the next day. And being evacuated several times on the job due to bomb threats and such because the restaurant was in the second tallest building in Boston.
I remember the vacant streets, the searchlights overhead at night, the fighter sorties every few minutes for the next two weeks I was there...I also remember having to fly back to Chicago on an American Airlines flight to O'hare and how much easier it STILL was to board a plane in Boston AFTER 9-11 than it was in Chicago BEFORE it.
I will never forget...

Your post was truly awesome...The tears keep rolling down my face....From reading your post, I can almost feel you fear, pain and trepidation that day.
I was at work when the UPS guy came in & told us that the first tower had been hit. My boss went home to get a TV & bring it back...while he was at home, the second tower was hit and my boss stayed home..glued to the TV. I went home & brought in a TV..and I vividly remember the office in total silence, no one talking, no phones ringing..just tears & sobs...NEVER EVER FORGET

On September 11,2001 I was waiting to go to my older daughters head start orientation.I had pbs on just like cat.My mom called I thought she was going to wish me a happy Birthday .I had been getting ready to call there and wish my Dad a happy Birthday (what a birthday gift he got in 69 LOL).I couldn't believe my eyes I kept thinking let it be a new version of war of the world I so wanted to hear" this has been a re-enactment of a stephen king book"
I kept switching back to cnn when the kids went to play in another room.there was no way they were going to see anything but Barney and Big bird that day if I had my way.Woke Billy up just as they were showing the pentagon .He thought it was a movie because some books have chillingly simiular scenes.no sleep for him after that.
I give the school staff alot of credit .they went on with the orientation and would quietly check in on the lounge tv.I know they were wondering what was going on but it was never mentioned. they said later that they all cried together after the last child left the building.
I went to my parents house that night and celebrated two birthdays and relected on the many lives that were lost or forever changed.when I tucked my kids into bed we prayed for all the babies born that day hoping that they would never see what we all saw that day......

WOW! What a freaky coincidence! I was also in Boston, getting all prepared for a grand opening party for a Jazz club and restaurant I opened with my former boss. The party was scheduled to be on 9/11/01. We had sent 200 invites out and got about 350 confirmations... it was going to be a blast. We had spent over $2,000,000 putting this place together and this party was supposed to be our big coming out. Of course, the party was cancelled.
The morning of the 11th, I was asleep in my boss's guest room, trying to get a lot of sleep so I could party my ass off that night. My cell phone started ringing non-stop and I tried like hell to ignore it. I didn't even want to wake up enough to turn it off. Eventually, quite irritated, I answered it. I was told to turn on the TV, nothing else. Of course, my boss didn't even have a TV or radio (don't ask), so I had to get up, get dressed and walk down the street to a business that had a TV. To my horror, the first thing I saw before I could ask anybody what was going on, was a replay of both planes hitting the towers. I knew at that moment the world was forever changed.
The first plane, the American flight from Boston to LA had a good friend of mine on it. Daniel Lewin was the CTO of Akamai, and he left his wife and two young boys behind. Danny had recently become a billionaire with the IPO of Akamai. All for what?
I had to get home to California, but I knew flying was out of the question. I was smart and rushed to the car rental place and got a Crown Victoria and my boss, his ex girlfriend and I all set out to drive across the country. I dropped them off in Boulder, Colorado and kept driving to San Francisco. It was an incredible drive. Looking up in the sky and not seeing ANYTHING flying was erie. Motels and hotels along our route were all packed, so we just drove in shifts. I made it to California in less than 3 days. That poor Crown Vic will never be the same. I was doing about 130mph through the Nevada desert.
What restaurant were you opening? Our place was called 'Limbo'. It ultimately did not survive the economic impact of 9/11, but it did stay open for a couple of years.

I will never forget. I was working on the Regional Rapid Response Epidemioligy team. We had the biggest outbreak of St. Louis Encephalitis in the states history. Had new cases popping up, people dying here. Was working out of the Emergency Operations Center for the region. The EOC was in the parish fire training center which also had the alarm room/delployment center with a big TV. I heard that a plane had hit one of the towers, i went and looked at the TV, but thought it may have been an accident. A bit later they came into the EOC and told us about the other plane. Then I had to leave and go deal with the problem at hand, (up to may ass in alligators, and not able to drain the swamp)

I was in the City and was smoking a cigarette and I heard this huge plane noise overhead and I remember thinking God that's low I hope it doesn't crash. I went upstairs in my building and while I was in the kitchen this co-worker comes in and says do I know anybody at the WTC. I said no and then he told me the plane had hit the tower. The plane I heard outside was the first plane that hit. I was mid-town not downtown in the Wall Street area and everyone was trying to get on cnn and msnbc to see more and hear more. Then 15 minutes later the other tower got hit. It was devastatng and I didn't know if we being attacked by another country or what. I was panicky. A friend told me to watch the first tower crumble and I just couldn't watch the whole thing come down. Some of the attorneys said we should maybe stay put but I was like no that's bullshit I am outta hear cause my buildings tall too and I didn't know if another one would hit our building. It was no joke everybody gathering on the street just it mad shock at what was happening. It was a scary time. I remember all of my co-workers one of who was pregnant and some of them had to walk downtown over the Brooklyn Bridge. Even when the subway station at Chambers Street started running I wouldn't take it for a long time. I had so many friends who worked at the WTC, a real close one worked at Windows on the World who luckily for him he was fired like 2 years before this happened. But he said if he would have been working there he probably would have been covering the meetings that were going on. It still frightens me whenever I hear a plane fly near my building and even if I'm in bed I duck afraid it will crash into my apartment. For a long time if I saw any middle easterners on the subways I would be scared to be near them if they had any kind of bag thinking they might be suicide bombers. It was a crazy crazy horrible time. I used to temp and almost took a job in a law firm there but I didn't. My friend Marlene used to work there back in 1998 on the 50 something floor and she lucikly quit the job. My offices a year before I took this job was at the World trade center in 2000. They ended up moving uptown not long before the attacks. I definitely would have taken the job there if they had still been there because the commute would have been closer. The most horrible thing was seeing the people with pictures of their loved ones who were missing. I couldn't imagine their pain and suffering. I was somehow not meant to work there for whatever reason. My prayers today are for the people who lost loved ones. When I think of the people that jumped out of the windows because of the heat I am overwhelmed. So that's my longwinded experience of that day I shall never ever forget. Whenever now I see a fire truck rushing towards a fire I say a prayer for them to please God just be safe. I don't like that they are making 9/11 cookies and confections. That is in my thoughts a vile way to profit over those people who lost their lives.

I know my last reply was longwinded but I had to add that what was really frightening to me was that the second tower was telling people to go back to work not realizing they were about to be hit. I am so thankful many did not heed those words and left anyway. I'm so so thankful that some left when they did. When we had the big blackout recently someone said maybe we should stay here until we hear from someone and we were all like hell no we are leaving. The streets were incredible with noone knowing what was going on. I ended up having to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge the next day but at least I left the building. I just wish they would all have just left including Port Authority and more lives could have been saved. That upsets me for some reason that more lives could have been saved but they listened to someone say go back to your office.

I was watching Good morning America, and welcoming my daycare kids on that Sept 11th. There wasn't one cloud in the sky I remember. I had a new child starting that morning and when her mom dropped her off I said " There is something happening at the World Trade Center". Together we watched the second plane hit and I remember without too many words she walked out of the house. I was thinking... Wow this mom really trusts me to leave like that on her childs first day without giving me any instruction... Later that day when she picked up her daughter she appologized and told me that she spent the rest of the day trying to locate her sister and her sisters boyfriend and that they both worked at the WTC. Remarkably they were not hurt. We had many friends that lost close family and friends because we are from the Boston area where 2 of the planes originated... it was horrible. I remember emailing Sean immediately he was in Quantico and he wrote back one word " Pray"... I will never forget. love to you and those you love...........ree

I was working at a power plant in colorado.A welder told me the first twin tower was hit,then he told me the second was hit.They sent everyone home for security resons,except my crew.They said that they needed to get the job done.I thought,great I am going to get blown up!But then I thought,I am in the middle of nowhere in Colorado.Like terrorists are going to blow up a power plant here.So,I kept working.I saw the video when I went to my motel room.I will never forget that.
