Gas Shortage / Panic Buying in Florida

The gas stations here have long lines as people panic to fill their tanks. Rumor has it that rationing was imposed (5 gallons per car) although I haven't seen confirmed this on any authoritative source (ie, newspapers, TV or radio stations). WTF??

You'd think with your Gov being so well connected and this being an election year that there shouldn't be too many problems down there. Jim

| Titusville has like one gas station open. I just filled my tank in Orlando and it was a terrible experience jsut finding a station that did not have bags on their pump handles.

| People are swearing that the governor has imposed rationing, but I think it is just a rumor as there is absolutely nothing in the press, and everyone I have talked to swear its true, but didn't hear it themselves. Our gas situation was pretty normal until today. The herd panics. What governor can protect people against themselves?

OK - the radio just said it is a rumor. The governor denies that there is rationing in Jacksonville or anywhere in the state. But the pumps will be dry by tonight, any way. Dumb Chits.

It's an urban legend. Jeb Bush was on TV a while ago and said it is completely untrue.

I just spent 45 minutes driving around Tampa trying to find a station that has gas....saw one fist fight over a pump (and not a good kinda pump at that.... ). Most stations are dry, and the grocery stores haven't restocked since Frances hit. If anyone sees the Caribe Royale Resort in Orlando go flying by on the news.....wave at me..... . The same thing happened here when the southern pipeline busted. There wasn't necessarily a huge shortage of gas, but everyone freaking out and filling up everything they had caused major shortages. I waited for 3 1/2 hrs for gas (on empty) once...

I do not understand why any one who can, doesn't just get in the car with all the family and pets and just drive north for a few days. It is just not worth risking lives. They have said this will be a bad one, maybe a 5. So WTF. Drive north! I just don't get it. It would only be like 12 hours to my house from Orlando. I have invited my relatives from Sarasota. We are thinking about driving down with the trailer and motorhome with a load of batteries, generators, and some gas. Maybe H2O. What do you think Floridian and JohnD, good idea????? Roxy?? At any rate, prayers to all of you in Florida. At least go to Walmart and get life preservers! all for dodging the storm....................Little Deb

| I am only on the edge of the damage - there were still some people at work that don't have power, but we only lost it for 12 hours or so. The situation is far worse further south, but I haven't been there so I cant say much. Generators and plywood have been flying off the shelfs here, but batteries and water are available. Was in Ace hardware the day before the storm and they wheeled in four generators, not sure if those were already sold.

I think some of the gas problems are people who are just topping their tanks off, why sit in line for 5 dollars worth of gas? I'm not saying this everbody, but alot of older people do this, have seen it. As for driving north where do we go? The storm has a mind of it's own. The States north have flooding from the storms. We are just going to secure our home and hang on. No need for panic, this will not change things, what happens will happen. Don't get me wrong, I am concered about the storm but you just can't panic, have to stay level headed. Mustang

| you are a sweetheart lil deb. no worries here though, ivan will be hitting the other coast from me, probably in the panhandle around pensacola. ps everybody remember what a beautiful state Florida is? it still is, it's a wonderful state. hurricane season only comes once a year and it's during the hot summer when I would rather stay indoors anyway. I Love Florida, always will. soon it will be fall, my favorite time of year down here. John D

| Huh? Uuhhh Little Deb...............You're thinking of driving a motor home with trailer into a hurricane? OK by me but you may find your motor home in Georgia. Ivan is going to be one big nasty blow. Most people wish they could just drive north and stay in a motel/hotel. But there just aren't 4 million rooms available. Your offer to the relatives is generous but can you sleep the other 3,999,000 others? Nice thought though.

Talked to Brad today....he's on an Island in SC not far from the Georgia border with his handicap mom, older sister, nephew and bitch sister that only goes for herself. He said him and the bitch sis got into a HUGE arguement about leavein if it got bad....she said 'no way is she leaveing or going anywhere' !!! Glad I didn't go...I'd of choked her shitless then shoved her sunglasses up her ass! She don't care the family 'mite' be in danger....she's haveing fun and paid alot for this cabin deal !!! Problem is Brad will have to haul them ALL out if he bails early cuz of bad weather.....he has limited room which is nuther reason I didn't go. (realatives were the other reason even tho I do like them.....kinda) Think there area will get hit with much ???......it worries me. Park people ain't sayin much and am SURE they don't want to scare vacationers out......beach houses were built in the 40's and 50's there......they get double rent "normally" but this is off season so anyone that does go is there 'paycheck' this time of year. Arghhhhhhh........sorry to RANT.........just makes me nervous and wonder if they could get out fast if they had to not bein real close to main drags and everyone else probly gettin the hint to LEAVE the same time. Fear of hurricanes Pam Sorry....I'm ina crappy mood anyhow...............and I still can't spell

Didn't Jeb say they were trying to make sure some of the coastal areas had extra gas? CNN or somebody interviewed him about it. Driving north isn't as easy as it sounds. Lots of traffic, shortages, expensive and short tempers no doubt. Maybe someone will heed your advice though, Deb. God what mess. Charlie

Got a question for someone who understands these charts they are posting on Ivan...My son, Stephen is being shipped out with the National Guard for Florida...He lives in SC but his unit is out of NE Georgia..they are still in Georgia but will go to FLorida tomorrow...It looks like to me that Ivan may hit NE Georgia after leaving Florida...if so, what will Georgia do then with their National Guard unit gone? This is confusing...worried mom in SC, nancyc
