Beverage Alcohol - a Clue?
« on: Sep 6th, 2004, 2:54pm »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

I'm sure we all agree on one thing, if not on many others, and that is the absolute certainty that if we take an alcoholic drink of any kind, and we are in cycle, we will be attacked by the Beast fairly soon.

Does anyone know the chemical/physiological action of alcohol on the body/brain?  The exact part of the brain that is affected, and how?

Why is it, do you think, that one drink of alcohol can set off such a reaction, when a sufferer is in cycle?  I suspect there may be aan etiology  clue or two here if we could understand the mechanism that operates--just asking.

Not ALL clusterheads have alcohol as a trigger.  Many do yes, but not all.   There-in lays the rub.  If it was a 100% occurance then I'm sure there would be more reliable data on this.  I'm sure floridian will be able to get you some information on this.  However,  since it's NOT a 100% thing, I'm not sure how reliable it is as a tool, even if the mechanism were known as to why it effects some CH'ers and not others.

I know this affects most of us but my real drinking days were back in the 70s and CH was never a result.  Maybe it was the anti-seizure drugs or something.

Vig is right - both nitroglycerin and alcohol increase the production of nitric oxide.  Nitric is a powerful relaxor of the smooth muscle in the blood vessels - they relax and expand, possibly putting pressure on the trigeminal nerve.

Nitric oxide also triggers release of CGRP - a small protein-like molecule that is involved in pain transmission.  CGRP increases the effects of substance P, the neurotransmitter responsible for the burning sensation of hot pepper.  Several researchers and pharmaceutical companies are looking into meds that block CGRP release - they seem to help with migraines and clusters.

Nitric oxide, CGRP and substance P are essential, but we have too much of them at one time in one place.

Alcohol has never spawned a CH for me, ever. Even when in cycle. (Wine kicks my ass the next morning though, with MONSTER hangovers.... Ugh...)

One sip off of one beer (or any alcoholic beverage), when I'm in cycle will give me a kip 10 everytime.

Makes my tolerance real low, so I'm a cheap drunk when I'm out of cyclelaugh

Alcohol has always been my test for determining if I'm out of cycle.  Fix myself an absolute martini and if I make it through without the headache--I'm out of cycle. Tongue
