An internet research question...

I know some of you are uber researchers and I'm ignorant of where I might look for a certain piece of info. I need a source to find a law. Specifically the one that says it is illegal to make a worker pay for accidental money lost. For example, if a bartender looses payment or doesn't collect on a check, the company cannnot make them pay for it. I know it's a law, I just don't have any idea where to find it for reference. Find a reference to that law and I'll make a $20 donation in your name to OUCH. Otherwise any ideas on where to search are appreciated! Thanks! PFDAN to you all!

Well, I didn't research your question but I did forward it to a family member who works in a large law firm in Indianapolis. If I hear anything back, I'll let you know. Unsolved

Can you go on a website for the Department of Labour (in canada, we use Employment Standards) to find what you need? Exactly the same thing happened to my son many years ago and we found that here, the employer may not take back money unless at the time of employment, the employee signed a document allowing them to do that! He worked in a bar and every night if there was a shortage, the bar manager took it from their pay cheques. There were 3 bartenders using one till so he used to split any shortfall 3 ways. Here we have 2 years to present a claim and they will go back to Day 1 and get all money back for you. Good luck with your search.

Using Google I found THIS Which says, According to the Wage and Hour Division of the US Department of Labor, employers can deduct the cost of uniforms, tools used in the employee's work, damages to the employer's property by the employee or any other individuals, financial losses due to clients/customers not paying bills, and theft of the employer's property by the employee or other individuals. However, employees may not be required to pay for such items if, by so doing, their wages would be reduced below the required minimum wage or overtime compensation. This is true even if an economic loss suffered by the employer is due to the employee's negligence. However, some states, such as California, do NOT allow the deductions listed above, or allow them only if the employee has signed a release in advance. So it depends on your State. Opus/Paul
