Has anyone tried this?

Hey everyone. There is something that I do sometimes at the onset that, just like everything else, sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. Curious if anyone else has tried it and if you haven't, I'd be curious for some of you to try it and let me know. Maybe I'm the only "weird" one in here. Anyway, at the onset, I take toilet paper and I twist it about 1 1/2 inches long and put it up my right nostril (mine are always on the right side) and I am very careful not to go too far (and not to lose it), but push it just beyond the point that is visible in the nose. During the times that this works I pretty much know it immediately cuz I feel some relief and when it isn't going to work, boy, I know that too cuz it just aggravates the shit out of it. I've gotten through some otherwise sleepless nights with t.p. up my nose. Here's my theories on it: I'm usually trying to press my nerve in my temple to "stop" the sensation but can't press hard enough, this seems like it presses that nerve from inside my head, like corking it off. Theory two: Just like a "Cluster Tampon", it seems to soak up the histimine as it is released, and clears the nasal drip on that side, which usually calls for repeated nose blowing during the HA. Theory three: You've all heard of the sneeze theory, which sometimes worked and sometimes didn't, well, by sticking this up there get me to sneeze sometimes and 50% of time, viola!!! The other times, Oh Well!!! I'd be curious to hear from some of you, and for those who haven't tried it, I pray that it works some of the time!!

it sounds like all that other stuff I thought would work but didn't. I used to think that if I took a bc powder at just the right time I would abort it, the link between the bc powder and my ch aborting dissappeared over time. tp up the nose ain't a cure, no way.

Boy, defensive people here. I didn't say it was a cure. There is no cure. I've had these for 11 years and I just shared one thing of many that are included in my Cluster ritual. There's probably a million things all of you do looking for relief in that moment of desparation. Just thought I'd ask. Remember, I've never met, talked to, e-mailed, heard from, heard of, or come across another cluster sufferer until today. I'm not trying to give you a cure, I'm trying to discover my own level of normalcy that I've been lacking for the last 11 years. I know I'm normal now, I've met people just like me that have tried EVERYTHING and just like me, get extremely offended if you ask if they've tried something else. I'm one of you....

Hey Chuck, I think your safe on this one since you're not saying you've found a cure. There are alot of little things that help with CH's. Unfortunately they seam to only last a short while as I'm sure you know how that goes. PFDAN

Absolutely, that's why I was CLEAR to say that it works for me sometimes, and sometimes not. If anyone on this site had something that worked everytime, all the time, then we wouldn't be here right now, and one of us would be incredibly wealthy!!!

Hey Johnny, I understand. That's why I don't talk to people about it anymore, BUT, since I'm new I'm still in that frame of mind that I only get pissed when a "non-cluster" tells me to try something. I figured if everyone in here has clusters and knows what they're like, what's the harm in asking?

Thanks, Boy, I was starting to get the feeling I was in the wrong place. I may be partially at fault here, you know, I've spent 11 years with chronic (I've never been even 1 week without at least one cluster) and the only people to talk to are family and friends. They feel bad and say they understand but not only do they NOT understand, but I don't understand what it must be like for them not to be able to help. That being said, this is my first time talking with people who actually DO understand and that's really weird for me. I've always gotten REALLY defensive with my family and friends after they found out that 98% of us smoke and that includes me. I always thought they were putting the responsiblity back on me. That's tough, cuz I didn't ask for these, nor did I ask to lose my marriage to these either, but that's what happened!!! Peace to all of you!!!!

Maybe we should all pool our money and get our own t.v. show. Then we wouldn't have to explain ourselves anymore, or better yet, we could sell ourselves on Pay-per view as some sick torture show, all of us rocking and pounding. We'd make a killing for research!!!

Welcome to clustervillve Chuck. Please ignore Jonny, as he is not happy with the size of his serpant sausage and tends to take it out on all of us. Believe me when I tell you I have heard of many a strange thing to try and kill the pain. I on the other hand have never done any thing wierd in the persute of relief.

Ha! Terlet paper up the schnoz. Kid stuff. Believe me, it doesn't sound very far off the wall to me. Sometimes I have a very iffy feeling that maybe our bodies get distracted when we do strange things to fight the pain and shuts it down while it makes sure we haven't done something really stupid or dangerous. As I say, it's iffy and wishful thinking. Nevertheless, I'd paint myself blue and worship rubber trees if it worked. You know, it would be fun to have a listing of all these crackpot ideas. Here's one that worked for me: Dr. Wright’s Circulatory Technique What follows is a technique learned from a neurologist: I am not sure what mechanism is triggered by this but whatever it is, at least indirectly helps kill the pain. I do know that this technique has nothing to do with meditation, relaxation, or psychic ability. It is entirely physical and takes some work. It involves concentrating on trying to redirect a little circulation to the arms, hands, or legs. It can described as a conscious circulatory flexing. Increased circulation will result in a reddening and warming of the hands. Try to think of it as filling your hands with redirected blood. The important and difficult part is that it has to be done without interruption through the pain. Do not give up in frustration. It may not work on the first try. Every now and then it will work almost immediately. I lived for those moments. Try experimenting between attacks. You will find that it gets easier with practice. I was given less than five minutes instruction in the use of method. The doctor, while placing his arm on his desk, showed me that he could slightly increase his arm and hand circulation. After several attempts, I was able to repeat this procedure and use it successfully. I have had about a 75% success rate shortening these attacks. My 20 minute attacks were often reduced to 10 minutes or less. Once proven that I had a chance to effectively deal with this horror, I always gave it a try as I had nothing to lose but pain. Perhaps it will help if you think of it as trying to fill the arm as if it is were an empty vessel. I used to try to imagine I was pushing blood away from my head into my arm. Use your imagination. There is one man who wrote that his standing barefoot on a concrete floor shortened his attacks. This may be similar as it draws some circulation away from the head. Cold water, exercise, or anything affecting circulation, seems to be worth a try. My suggestion is to not let up immediately when the pain goes. Waiting a minute is probably a good idea. So long as you do not slack off, this has a chance of working. This technique is very useful while waiting for medication to take effect or when none is available. It costs nothing, is non-invasive, and can be used just about anywhere. It is not a miracle but it helped me deal with this horror. It can be a bit exhausting but the success rate was good enough for me and a cluster headache sufferer will do just about anything to end the pain. It gives us a fighting chance. I hope this technique is helpful and I wish you the best of luck. Pay no attention to Jonny. He's getting farther away from us every day. We're thinking of telling him just how far around around the bend he's gone Charlie

Hey Charlie. That's great advice. I actually use that one too. Here in Chicago at the Diamond Headache clinic they include that in part of their Bio-feedback therapy. They equip every patient with a hand held thermometer to use and can also be brought home. With this device it makes it possible to perfect the technique because one can actually watch their own hand temp rise. I've gotten it to the point where I can get the temp of my extremities to rise from in the seventies all the way to the normal ninety eight degrees, BUT, during a cluster, it's a different ball game to keep the concentration unbroken like you said. Anyway, thanks for the positive msg!!!

Hey Chuck - welcome to the boards. Marc rolls up a long piece of toielt paper and stuffs it up the affected side, i dont know whether he does this to get relief (he has never said that it helps the pain) but he does it to stop his nose going mad in an attack. Its like someone turns a tap on with his nose during an attack and by doing the paper-stuffung thing it stops it dripping all over the carpet!
