Computer (laptop) HELP!!!

I have an “emachines” laptop. 512mb, 40 ghd. I don’t use my laptop very much, usually only when I go to the lakehouse, or if I go to a meet & greet. When I powered it down last Thursday night, everything seemed to be just fine. Friday, when I was going to put it in the case, I noticed that the power light was still on. It was disconnected from AC power, but seemed to be running off battery power. When I opened it and pushed the power button, nothing happened. Power stayed on, and there was no way I could figure out how to get the damn thing turned off. Nothing is showing on the monitor. It is as if it is turned off. I tried holding the power button down for several seconds, tried ctrl/alt/del, tried everything else I could think of. No luck. You know, the laptops get quite “hot”, so I finally decided that I would remove the battery. That is the only way to turn this sucker off. When the power light is on…..nothing works…..not the power button…..not pushing any other or all of the keys, and my CD/RW won’t open. I called emachines support……that was a waste of time. He told me to put the restore disc in….LMAO. Not sure how he thought I could accomplish that! Nothing works…..except for the power light. He said it could be the “mother board”. I tried inserting the battery again, thinking this might trigger it to work, but no luck. Any ideas????? Sounds like the power button is getting mixed signals. LOL I am at a loss!! Thanks, in advance…….. Jean

Jean, Do you have your Screen Saver Power Settings set for the hard disk to shut down after a certain amount of time? This happened to me once, like what's happening to yours, and I changed my settings for my puter to never shut off so I can do it all manually. mel

Sounds like the light, might be a low battery warning, just charge it up and the light should go off, My Viao Laptop does the same thing" Pappy

The power light is blue.......battery light is green. Now, I know that the battery has to be low, because the laptop stayed on for a long time, before I realized it. However, I can hook it to ac power......the battery light never comes on.....just the power light. Melissa, I always have mine to where I can shut down manually. I did think about that though.....however....nothing works except for the light (power). If you hold the laptop to your ear....you can hear the damn thing running....not sure if that's the hd running, or the fan. Can't get it to come on to check anything. Just wish I could get it to respond to ANYTHING!!! If I could get the monitor to work, then I could possibly check settings. It's like...the power button is stuck....I shut it down....and it was fine. Thanks, pappy and Melissa..... Jean

| You gotta love script following tech support morons. Try removing the battery and powering it just on AC power. If that works, you may have to replace the battery. Try just removing the hard drive and starting it up. I doubt that it will work, but it doesn't cost anything to check. IF it does start up, the hard drive will probably have to be replaced. Even if the laptop is out of warranty, the hard drive may not be. Most of the major manufacturers have like 3 year warranties on their drives. Let me know and I can help you with this. If it is still under warranty, demand they fix it. Be advised if you send it in to be repaired any information on the hard drive WILL be lost. The first step they will do (after scanning it for good porn ) is to reformat the hard drive. If there is any data on the drive on any importance, I would have someone back the hard drive up for you before sending it in. If it is out of warranty and you don't have any friends close by that could look at it, I would suggest taking it to a reputable computer repair shop. That shouldn't be hard to find in Houston. If you were closer, I'd look at it for you. Just a couple suggestions. Wish I could give you some real help. Good luck, Gator

However, I have not attempted to power up w/out the battery. Will do that now. Not under warranty....warranty expired July 26th. Not too worried about loss on the hard drive....I don't use it very much. Most of my important stuff is on my desktop. Gonna go try the power up "thingey" w/out battery! Thanks, Gator.....I preciate it, sweetie

Here's a shot in the dark. Try holding down F8 while trying to boot up. Or F2. Never know might get something to work.

Turn it over, and pull out the battery with the power cord disconnected. Then put the battery back in, plug it back in, and turn it on. Let me know if it worked. Little Deb Ok so I did n't read the posts close enough...you already tried. How about this..... Hold down your fn key,, while hitting the corresponding f5 or which ever "f" key has a little monitor icon on it. this will turn on/off the monitor screen.

Sorry can't help, I have to figure out how to install an operating system on a laptop without a floppy and and that won't boot from CD-ROM. Check out this solution. Don't worry, not X rated. Opus/Paul

Sorry about the 'puter. The inability to do much for them when they break is the primary reason I haven't bought one yet. I build my own computers - more bang for the buck, ya know! Did you try starting it up with the drive out of the computer? It won't boot of course, but if it comes up to the system screen, that's a good thing. Like I said, I didn't think it would work, but it was a shot. It might be worth the diagnostic fee to take it to a local tech if nobody here has any other suggestions. There are a few other things a tech can check. Good luck. Gator

Dunno if ya tried this yet... Found it on the eMachines website so you prolly have, but it's worth a shot: # The brightness setting may be down too low. Press Fn + F8 several times to increase the brightness of the display. # Your notebook may be sending its display to an external monitor or TV. Press Fn + F4 several times to toggle through the attached display, an external monitor or TV, or both. # The lid switch may be stuck. Press the lid switch button (located on the keyboard above the function keys near the base of the display) several times to release it. PFDAN............................................. Drk^Angel
