Jonny, Bottom line is the service pack makes your computer more secure and there are no real problems with the download. It's definitely worth the download. Now, by fixing some security holes, they've made a few badly written applications break, and that's where you hear people complaining. You should definitely download it. -Shawn

No Jonny, the whole point is Windows had some awful security holes and SP2 plugs some of those holes. Some applications (very few) used to depend on Windows being configured in a very insecure way, and those are the ones that are having problems. You really should get it now, you'll be safer for it. -Shawn

The official policy at my company is not to install it. I also read that it breaks some programs, like Quicken that use Internet Explorer alot. I am waiting before I install it on my home computer also.

Be very careful...in the true spirit of Microsoft it can kill your computer. I have had 2 seperate IT pros tell me they have had to completely reformat some machines while others were fine. I received an email from my ISP about patches just to connect after installing SP2. This is the email I received from SBC: Dear SBC Yahoo! Member: If you are using the Windows XP Operating System on any of your computers connected to SBC Yahoo! Dial or SBC Yahoo! DSL, this courtesy message is for you. Users of other operating systems are not affected. In August, Microsoft Corporation will be offering Windows XP users an update called "Service Pack 2". You may hear about the Service Pack 2 update in the news, on the Internet, or by seeing prompts on your computer screen telling you to load a "Critical Upgrade" to Windows. Service Pack 2 provides a series of security enhancements for the Windows XP operating system. These new updates and features may cause SBC Yahoo! and other software on your computer to behave differently. Based on our testing, SBC has determined that some users will experience changes after loading Service Pack 2 when using the customized SBC Yahoo! Browser, Parental Controls, SBC Yahoo! Web mail, and Instant Messenger. SBC and Yahoo! have prepared an update for these software components that you should load to ensure compatibility with Service Pack 2. Please copy and paste the below URL into your browser to download the software update. http://download.yahoo.com/dl/sbcy/xpsp2fix.exe In addition, if you are using a firewall on your XP computer, you will need to go to the firewall manufacturer's website and load any software updates they provide for Service Pack 2. Although we do not provide support for firewall software, you can find information and web-links for the major firewall companies at: Zone Alarm: http://www.zonelabs.com Norton Personal Firewall: http://www.symantec.com/sabu/nis/npf/ McAfee Personal Firewall Plus: http://www.secureie.com/c/002/firewall2004/firewall2004_02.asp?source=go og&keyword=firewall& If you experience changes with other software on your computer, check the software manufacturer's website for information regarding Service Pack 2 software updates. Please refer to the SBC Yahoo! Help Site, http://help.sbcglobal.net/ , for more details on Windows XP Service Pack 2 and SBC Yahoo! software updates that are available for your computer. If you want to know more about the Windows XP Service Pack 2 update, please refer to the Microsoft site at http://support.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2 or call 1.888.SP2.HELP (1.888.772.4357). If you need additional help with SBC Yahoo!, please refer to the SBC Yahoo! Help Site at http://help.sbcglobal.net Sincerely, SBC Yahoo! Member Services For me I will wait...I'll stick with my router and Norton Internet Security. I am tired of Microsoft updates causing more problems than they are trying to solve. Safe computing to all.

OK... be scared, be frightened. It's all a conspiracy anyway. Anything Microsoft does is surely evil. But, in all seriousness, the good outweighs the bad by a longshot. SP2 changes default behavior in Windows to be very much like all these Microsoft-bashing-know-it-alls have been screaming about for a LONG time. The fact is, some vendors (like Intuit) have designed their product in ways that took advantage of the 'holes' that existed, and fixing the 'holes' does make you have to work a *little* bit to make those applications function correctly after the patch is applied. For example, there is a cool utility called nmap that works on windows. Problem is, it only worked on windows because windows allowed an application to build raw packets and send them to any port. So security people screamed about that and said that capability should not be enabled by default. Now, SP2 changed that default behavior in windows, so nmap doesn't work anymore unless you know what to do about it. So, that just enables all the microsoft bashers to scream about the fact that SP2 breaks applications. Sorry, I think that is bullshit. The fact is this... MOST avergae windows users will be 1000x better off with SP2 installed, period. It's the advanced users that will know why a certain application just stopped working, but there will be a few in the middle who have an application that is working quite right and they might be confused. If those applications come from reputable vendors, those users will quickly know exactly what to do to make the application work because a good company tells their users about such things. I wholeheartedly endorse installing this update and wish more users WOULD install it so we don't have these ridiculously stupid worms that spread only because windows has such a stupid default configuration without SP2. -Shawn

I have a bit of fun at Microsofts exspense now and then. But I don't really consider myself much of a MS basher. I asked MS why they removed nmap fiunctionality in SP2, and this is the reply I recieved. "We have removed support for TCP sends over RAW sockets in SP2. We surveyed applications and found the only apps using this on XP were people writing attack tools." They have 6000 full time programmers on staff, and that is their considered opinion. If you feel qualified to disagree with them. Be my quest. Meanwhile nmap, nessus, SARA, tcpdump, ethereal et al, shall remain part of my toolset. YMMV Be carefull out there, and please be well.

why does everything always get taken to extremes of good and evil? I am waiting to install xp sp2 until I know all my programs will work with it. Does that make me a microsoft basher? good grief

| The firewall was there all along, it was just never turned on. Hopefully like Fubar said it will help stop some of the worm attacks, but of course most peaple with worm infected boxs don't get updates anyway. Opus/Paul

If you already have XP installed, the website gives you the instructions on how to configure your puter to turn on the XP2 updates, so when they are ready to come out, it'll be automatically downloaded.... (am i right? lol) mel
