A worthwhile cause.........men and women

Please send this to everyone in your address book. If there
was ever a time when our voices and choices should be heard, this is one of those times. If you are receiving this it's because I think you will
take the 30 seconds to go and vote on this issue...and send it on to
others you know who will do the same.

There's a bill called the Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act which will require insurance companies to cover a minimum 48-hour hospital stay for patients undergoing a mastectomy. It's about eliminating the "drive-through mastectomy" where women are forced to go home hours after surgery against the wishes of their doctor; still groggy from anesthesia and sometimes with drainage tubes still attached.

Lifetime Television has put this bill on their web page with a petition drive to show your support. Last year over half the House signed on.
PLEASE!!!! Sign the petition by clicking on the web site below and help women living with breast cancer get the care they need and deserve!! There is no cost or monetary pledge involved. You need not give more than your name and zip code number.

http://www.lifetimetv.com/health/breast_mastectomy_pledge.html

This takes about 2 seconds. PLEASE PASS THIS ON. THANKS

A very worthy cause.  Some more info:

H.R. 536, the Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act of 2001, was sponsored by Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut and sought to "amend the Public Health Service Act and Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 to require that group and individual health insurance coverage and group health plans provide coverage for a minimum hospital stay for mastectomies and lymph node dissections performed for the treatment of breast cancer." Among other provisions, it would mandate that the benefits of patients covered under group insurance plans may not be restricted "for any hospital length of stay in connection with a mastectomy for the treatment of breast cancer to less than 48 hours."

Although the original petition (cited above) in support of this bill stated that "last year over half the House signed on," H.R. 536 was never brought to the floor of Congress for a vote after being introduced on 8 February 2001. It was referred to two different committees when it was introduced on 8 February 2001 and subsequently languished in subcommittees without ever being brought up for a vote. Rep. DeLauro reintroduced the bill as H.R. 1886 in April 2003, and it has so far been referred to the same subcommittees as the 2001 version.

One drawback of the petition linked above is that Lifetime states it "will deliver these signatures to Rep. DeLauro's office on Capitol Hill and to the White House." Delivering signatures to Rep. DeLauro is of little use, since as the sponsor of the bill she obviously already supports it, and the White House (i.e., President Bush) rarely has direct involvement in the process of getting a bill out of committee and through Congress. Although delivering petitions to Rep. DeLauro and the White House might be useful as a show of support for the bill, a better approach to getting this legislation passed would probably be for interested voters to contact their own Representatives directly and urge them to pass H.R. 1886.
