F*$@&*G Spam!

Remember that bullshit post from the Russians with bad english about the "discounted software"?
Well, I simply clicked on the link one time then closed the window... Since then my main email acct has been breached. I get several mails a day from them.
I'm normally very vigilant about keeping my accts spam free, but now my main acct has been compromised. Thankfully they seem to not have spread my email, I'm getting hit by them only, but what a pain in the ass.
Of course it's from all different names, invalid addresses, etc....
Any advice on how to get rid of them?

I get he same shit from the south africans and nigerians.  All I can thik of is to block the domain tag (".sa or .ni or something like that).  Sometimes if you have a spam or junk email filter you can configure that too.  Thats about as PC literate as I can get.

Good Luck

Know what you mean. I get about 35 spams everytime I log on. I use Norton spam filter. Not bad at all

Hi,

I use mailwasher, it takes a peek at the server and gives you only the headers. Then you can delete and mark as blacklisted before you download mail. Works pretty well for me.

Netscape 7.1 has a built-in spam filter and pop-up window blocker, and it's built on the Mozilla platform. Good stuff.

Agree with IJ.

If you are getting spam from just a few sources, then just block those domains.

If using Outlook, reference 'blocked senders list'.  One can block a single email address or an entire domain.

Superpain,

If you just visited a site and didn't give them your email address and they are now sending you spam then the site may have put spyware on your system that mined you email address from your client. If this is what happened a cleaning is necessary and always keep your firewall locked tight.

Opus/Paul

PS Mozilla is the open source release of Netscape. Both Netscape and Mozilla have a package of a browser, email client and website composer. Firefox is a beta stand alone browser that will replace the current Mozilla browser when it is finished. Thunderbird is a beta stand alone mail client that can be used with firefox. There is even an extension that will combine the two like the current Mozilla package.

Superpain,

If there's a spyware on your computer, you can download a programm called "SpyBot".  It will get rid of 'pop-ups' also.  Just look for it on the Net.  It's free and does the job. Wink

As for your e-mails, there's a new generation a virus that grabs people's 'address book' and then:
- send it to various party who then use it for spams Angry
- use the addresses in the book to send viruses to the other people on the list and then grabs their address books and send itself again and again and again (....boring) sleep

Short of changing your e-mail address, there's nothing you can do about that.  The virus uses somebody in the address book as the 'sender'. Who you see as the sender is not who's sending it to you. Shocked
So your aunt Petunia could be recieving an e-mail that she thinks is coming from your brother....but it would really be coming from you.

That's how viruses spreads.  ALWAYS BE AWARE OF E-MAILS FROM FRIENDS THAT HAVE "ATTACHMENTS".  Read the e-mail but don't open the attachment if you are not sure what is is.

Quote:
mark as blacklisted before you download mail.

Will work only if the sender is always the same person.

Quote:
then just block those domains

Could work.  But you could be blocking legitimate e-mails  Sad

Whatever you do, don't EVER reply to those spams (I'm talking the real ones, that promise to enlarge any parts of your body and such Embarassed).  If you do, it will just confirm to them that your address is valid.

Boy!  That's a lot of stuff.  Shocked

If you need clarifications, I'll be happy to help (if you can stand my misspells Wink).
