The term "chronic" gets thrown around a lot lately. The new IHS diagnostic guidelines state less than one month of pain free time in one year.

Hmmm ... Maybe I am not chronic? In the past six plus years I think I MIGHT be able to put together ALMOST 30 days PF. Does that mean I am NOT chronic? YEEEHAAAWWWW!!!! Chuck PS: Wait a minute, I think it only comes up to 25 days in the past 6+ years, DAMN!

I'm happy to report that NO, I am not chronic anymore. What a blessing. Wouldn't wish that hell on anybody. In addition, I have gained a whole new appreciation for those who contemplate suicide, since before my 3 year chronic episode I thought you had to be insane to consider suicide. I know better now. I also know I am unable to commit that final act of selfishness, and for that knowledge I am truly thankful. -Shawn

After having no breaks for over 6 years and being chronic I can happily say that as of today It has been 5 months since my last ha! I actually sat outside in the hot sun and enjoyed myself this afternoon. 5 months ago that would have been triggering very intense ch to the point where I would want to go to the er or off myself. I thank God everyday for this change in routine.

Nope, I ain't chronic. Heck I have only had one ungodly cycle that lasted 4 months. Hoping that I am on the 99 year plan. I feel for those that are chronic, headaches (yea, I only call them that cause I haven't had one in almost 1 1/2 years) SUCK.

Sadly there does seem to be a lot of chronics here, but what better place for us to be...where else can we come for the understanding and support, but here... It also makes for a solid daily base for the episodics who come and go...We are also supported by the episodics who remain and continue their support to us and others who seem to show up on a too regular basis...Look at the Guestbook for all the postings who also seem to fit the Chronic group? I for one am very proud of each and everyone of us...facing CH everyday, we continue to face life head on...are we not able to continue to smile and accomplish much in our lives... 143

awwwww hell, don. I had 8 days a few months ago. I thought I was halfway to being episodic. I still think I'm just an episodic with long ass cycles.

Yup chronicically chronic since 2/98. A few 12-14 day breaks in 2001. Went haywire again in 2002. After many failed attempts, Imitrex finally worked for me upon trying it again August of 2003. Had no abortives until then, just rode th bastards out. Just enjoyed 3 p/f days. That ended this morning. ARRRRRRGH! CD

No you won't Jeep. You know why? You're fucking stronger than this piece of shit beast in your head. To end it due to CH is like going to war, being in battle, and saying, "I'll end it now before the enemy takes me over." When you might be at the brink of victory. Never surrending to the ClusterBeast!!! Fight that fucker to the bitter end! Besides, you're not fighting the war alone. We are ALL here with you fighting side by side. War and Peace, Carl D

*sigh* You're right, Carl. Dammit, though... I hate the fact that there is a such thing as cluster headaches, and hate it even more that there are people who are chronic and never get a break from the beast. That just tears me up...

Chronic seems to really only matter for things like disability, treatment options or whatever. Whether you meet the definition for chronic or not, CH still sucks. It doesn't matter to me if someone calls themselves chronic or not...my pain's still the same. Chris

I was diagnosed chronic 5 yrs ago. If the beast gave me a two day break, I thought I was in heaven. I soon learned however to almost dread these small breaks because the beast always seemed to make me pay dearly for them. The lithium seemed to take some of the wind out of him, but he was still relentless even if somewhat weaker. Then I found verapamil. I know it doesn't work for everyone, but for me it's been a God send, especially since I finally seem to have found the right dosage. But if there's one thing I've learned- it's to not get excited. I know it's no "majic bullet!" I had 26 days straight PF, but the beast has showed up the last three weekends hitting me hard 6-8 times a night just to let me know he's still around! At one point a few months ago, I even tried giving up meds altogether just to see what would happen. BIG MISTAKE!! So, according to the IHS, I would not be classified as chronic anymore. All I know is without any meds, I get hit hard daily. With them and all of their side effects, life is closer to the way I remember it being before all of this started. So I will happily wear the tag "episodic" although it is a lie. But you'd better believe when that "majic bullet" does come along, I'll take it and happily call myself PAIN FREE!!!! An epicodic in one long episode.................... ...............................................................alley

Yep - supposed to be chronic now. Started July 13 - got 12 pf days in Oct. Got 2 4 day breaks - one the end of Dec. Stopped on Christams Morning - now that really sucked to ride out a HA while my kids where trying to open presents. The other was end of Feb. Soiince then so such luck. But I am starting to get shadows now on the right side where I only had HA EVER on the left side. Not sure if the bastatrd is changing on me or if it is just cause I put in over 60 hours last week and work and it is just stress. -Tia
