Struggle
A man found a cocoon of a butterfly. One day a small opening appeared; he sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to force its body through that little hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could and it could go no farther.
Then the man decided to help the butterfly, so he took a pair of scissors and snipped off the remaining bit of the cocoon. The butterfly then emerged easily. But it had a swollen body and small, shriveled wings.
The man continued to watch the butterfly because he expected that, at any moment, the wings would enlarge and expand to be able to support the body, which would contract in time.
Neither happened! In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling around with a swollen body and shriveled wings. It never was able to fly.
What the man in his kindness and haste did not understand was that the restricting cocoon and the struggle required for the butterfly to get through the tiny opening were nature's way of forcing fluid from the body of the butterfly into its wings so that it would be ready for flight once it achieved its freedom from the cocoon.
Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our life. If nature allowed us to go through our life without any obstacles, it would cripple us. We would not be as strong as what we could have been.
And we could never fly...

For OUCH, for each of us as individuals... I've always loved this story. It ties in nicely with my determination to find some good in all of this pain.
But for the darkness, we could not recognize the light. Steel is nothing until it is thrust into the forge, beaten with hammers, honed, tempered in fire again, and then polished into a sword fit for the hand of a great king.
Most of the time, even in the middle of a horrendous cycle, I get this image of me standing on a mountaintop with a hellacious storm raging and crashing all around me, above me the boiling black sky and below me, the raging angry sea. As the lightning streaks down and the rain blasts out of the heavens, I'm still there, shaking my fist in the air and yelling, "COME ON!! Is THAT the best you can do??? I'M STILL STANDING!! HIT ME WITH YOUR BEST SHOT!! I DARE YOU!!!"
I've fallen off of a 40' waterfall, been to two wars, been stabbed, shot at, been in numerous car wrecks, attempted suicide three times, broke my neck diving into a shallow pool, been thrown from horses, been in uncountable fistfights, nearly beaten to death by my parents, been in two motorcycle wrecks, survived being born two months premature, and nearly had two fatal crashes in my ultralight. I'm still here, perfectly healthy (except for cluster headaches), and whatever else life can dish out, all I've got to say on the matter is, "BRING IT!!"

Thanks, Butterfly. *smiling at you* All I can say is that it certainly hasn't been dull. LOL
If I couldn't smile, that would mean that I was defeated, and I refuse to ever be defeated. It's nice to be able to turn around and bless it all, because it has brought me to this point, and looking around at my life, I can say that for the most part, I am truly happy.
