Forbes article on headaches

Brief mention of clusters in a brief article - not great coverage, but not bad - maybe we'll pick up a few stockbrokers or CEOs as a result.
Quote:

About 90 percent of cluster-headache sufferers, on the other hand, are male.

"It usually centers around one eye and is called cluster because it occurs in a series or bunch, several in a day for two or three or four months and then they go away," Diamond said. "It's a very severe, terrifying pain and the only suicides we see from headaches are with cluster-headache patients because of the severity. It will wake a man up from a sound sleep. It's one of the most severe pains that a man can get."

Cluster headaches can involve other symptoms as well, including drooping eyelids, tearing of the eye and congestion of the nose. Again, there are medications to lessen the pain during an attack, to stop short an attack and to prevent an attack.

--"About 90% of cluster headache sufferers, on the other hand, are male."
--"It will wake a man up from a sound sleep. It's one of the most severe pains a that man can get."

Seeing that about 10% of cluster headache patients are female I am left to wonder what is "the most severe pain that a WOMAN can get?"

Do cluster headaches wake up women from sound sleep also?

It saddens me deeply to see well-respected and well-known neurologist  like Dr. Diamond use such sexist language when referring to CH in such a widely circulated magazine. His words and mind set make it even more difficult for women with CH to get properly diagnosed and treated.  In a sense what he is doing is perpetuating the "myth" that only men get CH.

I will not debate that 90% of CH sufferers are male but he easily could have said : "Cluster headaches will wake up SUFFERERS from a sound sleep. It is one of the most severe pains that ANYONE can get."

The terms "sufferers" and "anyone" are gender neutral terms implying that both men and women can be affected. I believe that 10% of any group is statistically significant and should not be ignored.

Thank you very much and I'll be stepping down from the soap box now.

P.S. Hey, Floridian-- I'm not dissing you my fellow research loving friend.  I hope you don't take it the wrong way.  I always love to read your posts.

Nah, I know the criticism isn't directed at me. I'm just relaying what I came across.  Like I said, not great coverage.  The pop press tends to present things in very fuzzy terms, and the author of that article may have had a bit of bias.

It was improper to say 'worst pain a man could get' after saying 90% cluster sufferers are men, leaving 10% to be women, but it was not _offensive_, I mean, come on.   Roll Eyes

Mankind would be the proper word, all inclusive.

No one's ever mentioned a 9:1 ratio anyway.
The worst I'd ever heard was 5 or 6.... and now I see it's more like 2:1 and probably approaching 1:1.

...and that was from Seymour Diamond, head of the Diamond Headache Clinic.

I can certainly see your point Sam. It's hard enough to get a proper diagnosis as a man. With thinking like that, a woman sufferer would almost automatically be diagnosed with migrane!

I have always known it to be predominantly men.  I think we have a disproportionate amount of women on this board because many of the men that suffer from this malady are the types that don't browse the internet and come across this site.

I blame all of this women and cluster headaches mumbo jumbo on women's lib.  Nothing is sacred anymore.  Women want everything us men got, right on down to our torturous pain.

They wear our boxers now, our shirts, our jeans for crying out loud.  They take our jobs AND they keep taking my tools.  I wish they would stop     Grin Grin Grin
