Anyone that has read the EULA on their Micro$oft products knows they do not own the product. They are buying a limited permission to use it. Since all the lawsuits came out, I have thought it would be funny for Microsoft to recall all it's licenses and go out of business and watch the show. MS used to be only one of many operating systems. I used some of them like IBM PC DOS and Digital Research DOS (DRDOS). I really liked DRDOS, it had better memory management capabilities than MSDOS. The others failed to progress and fell by the wayside. This is Bill Gates' fault? Screw them all. Brother Bill has enough scratch to live comfortably for the next 2000 years, why bother with the hassle anymore? I can see myself learning Linux in the near future. I've actually been meaning to, but with this slow-assed internet connection it would take years to download all the components. Could be fun to watch! Gator

Nope. Don't think it would happen. Bill and Steve like doing what they are far too much to give it up just yet. Atleast Steve Ballmer seems to be enjoying himself. I think its just Dvorak ranting again.

I agree. If I were in Bill Gates' shoes, I would have sold off all of my stock, sold the company to whomever wanted it, and said, "I've made all the money I'll ever need, so fuck you, fuck you very much. I quit!" And then I would have bought a nice little island somewhere, and spent the rest of my life snorkeling, drinking pina coladas, and swimming around in the pool.

I agree that Dvorak does go off on tangents grasping for topics to write about. But I also think it just possible he's actually hit on something this time. The quote that gives me pause is the one by Gates when asked how long he intends to run Microsoft. Maybe he is still "having fun." But with all the law suits and more recent headaches that M$ has experienced, you've gotta wonder if the guy is still having fun! I myself think Longhorn may just hold the answer to that question. If the long awaited os pans out to be as touted, it will be a whole new ball game for Bill and company. On the other hand, if it turns out to be another patch work quilt........well brother Bill may find recreation in dumping the whole mess! .....................................alley

| Not much to learn any more, just point and click, which distro would you like, right now I got SuSE free ISO ( 1 CD ), Xandros free version ( 1 CD and some restrictions), Fedora core 1( 3 CD's), Mandrake 9.2 ( 3 CDs) ,Knoppix which you can run on CD without installing, or I can download Fedora core 2, or Mandrake 10, both are 4 CD's. Knoppix is a great way to test because you don't have to install, SuSE and Mandrake have live CD's too. I also have slackware 9.1, but I can get the new 10, there is learning involved with Slack. Let me know. Opus/Paul

| I really don't know enough about it to know. I started with MSDOS 3.3 and other assorted DOS's. I forgot more about DOS than most people ever knew. I didn't get into Windows until 3.11 for Workgroups. Took me a long time to give up my command prompt. I have used every major Windows revision since and currently use Windows XP Pro, though admittedly I have far from mastered all it's nuances. At this particular point in time, I really don't feel like learning all that from scratch again. I'm sure I would eventually start playing with it and learning about all the features and functions. Point and click/drag and drop works for me for now. The biggest thing I want, besides trouble free functionality, is computer and network security and user account control. So, I'm open to suggestions. Advise me o wise one of the penguins! Gator

Gator, Even though you know MSDOS it is probably good to start simple. You will probably like Bash ( the most used shell on Linux) with copy paste features and push tab for auto complete. You can even alias bash commands to work like msdos ones. I tested the SuSE ISO and it wasn't that great, I am testing Xandros right now ( oops it crashed ). It sounds like you will need a full setup anyway. PM me your address, I will send you Knoppix ( runs from disk ) and Mandrake 10 when I get it download. I may be getting SuSE 9.1 ISOs which would be the best I think. I also have the Ultimate boot CD, it is filled with all those utilities that run from floppy but all on one CD. Opus/Paul
