Anyone try Prednisone?

I have found that NOTHING has worked to prevent or abort my hits. SOOOOO..... I go camping, and get some wierd ass mesquito bites on my hand, and have some kind of allergic reaction to them. My hands swelled up and cracked... blah blah.. pretty nasty. The Doctor gives me a prednisone pack a.k.a. steroids... The whole time I'm taking this I have NOOOOO headaches. The day after I finish the "pack" I get hit worse than ever. So the Dr. gives me another pack. (which is about a week's worth) Again, no headaches, untill I've finished them all. So I call her and beg her to give me more! I'm taking them again now, and no hits. The bad thing: I'm reading about prednisone, and it's super bad for your immunine system. It takes like a year for your immunine system to recover. It says on the bottle to avoid contact with people who have a contagious disease! What the hell should I do? I'm afraid I'm already getting addicted to them. Oh and by they way, This shit makes you soooooooo hungry! I can't eat enough to get full! I'M TURNING INTO A FAT ASS! Please give me some advise, you guys know more than my freakin Dr.! Thanx all! Lisa

Yes... we have all done it. Pred is a transitional... we take it until the long-term preventative of your choice (ie Topamax, Verapamil, Lithium) kicks in. Do a find on pred. Lotsa data on it. Lobstah

Lisa Do have a read around this site about prednisone/prednisolone, there's lots here, but check carefully as you already may be at the limit of the time recommended to take it (usually 2-3 weeks only). It is a short term treatment only, usually used while waiting for another preventive e.g. Verapimil to kick in or to 'break' a cycle. Also VERY importantly you must taper off it, not just stop taking it and yes it can compromise your immune system (amongst other side effects) Wendy

Happy for ya don!! Lisa, the pred taper is pretty common, you can search this site for it. It IS transitional, and temporary. You can't take it all the time. It does have side effects. You need to determine if they are worth it compared to your headache. here's to painfree days and nites!! purpleydog

That is great don. I am just finished off my prednsone, I only got hit once yesterday and have only had shadows today so far... so I guess that is a good thing. But it did not make them totally stop. That would have been a nice break. Please be careful. No med is worth taking that has so many side effects long term, there has to be something that you are using it as a bridge too. -Tia

Hi Lisa, Forget for a minute what Don weighs (you can find a list of the various foods he's eaten on an earlier post - I'm sure the 3 seagulls added a few pounds). Have you been diagnosed with CH? If not, do you think you have them (sounds like it)? If so - I ditto "Don the Gigantic" and his response. You probably need Verapamil or another CHA preventative, plus an abortive like O2 or Imitrex. Prednisone should not be taken for long periods of time. It wrecks your body and immune system (in addition to making you ravenous!!!) It's meant to stop your pain until the prevents have a chance to work. Talk to your doc and get a proper diagnosis, followed by some type of CH treatment. Good luck and best wishes! Kris

Hey you can all kiss my ass. And you could. Even if everybody lined up shoulder to shoulder. I now cover two zip codes and get charged for roaming to call myself.
