Damn my work pisses me off.....

I work with juvenile deliquents. It can be the most rewarding job in the world, if you work hard at it and can just help one kid out of 30 a day. Anyway, the not a very nice persons who make our schedules each month have pissed me off. I usually work 2p till 10p each week with Wed and Thurs off. Well, for some reason this month they put me on a mixed schedule of afternoons and midnights. While that might not seem too bad......it is. The midnight shift is 10p till 6am. On alot of days this month, I get off at 6 am.....drive 30 min home, go to sleep after tossing and turning......get up at noon or so, get ready and have to be back at 2p the same day. I haven't hardly slept since last Thursday and it is starting to catch up to me. The main reason I am pissed is that is triggers these damn headaches between being so tired and stressed out.......

Then what you need to do is document your conditio0n with HR and then request a "reasonable accomodation"
Do you work for a non profit organization or a government agency?
So how does it feel to come here and deal with adult deliquents ?

Yeah - and then ask them HOW they expect you to be patience enough to deal with juvenille delinquents when you get NO sleep.

It is a job with the state. It is in the Dept of Juvenile Justice. To tell you how my week went this week.....I worked 2 till 10 one Fri....6am till 10p on Sat (had to pull a double thanks to asswipes calling in for the holiday weekend)......went home and had to take the wife out Sat night.....got up early to do the family thing on the 4th (which I didn't nor can I take a nap during the day)...went in at 10p on the 4th.....had to be back at 2p on the 5th.....then had to work another midnight on the 6th.
And like Woobie said.......they expect us to come in and have patience with these kids. For the most part, it is a great job. But it doesn't take long for these kids to get under your skin. You never know what is going to happen on a daily basis. You can go in and the 12 kids you have that day might have no probs. Then you go in the next day and have to restrain 3 of em cause the want to start fights or do whatever.
Luckily, when I go back tommorow.....I have 4 days of afternoons and only work one midnight (next Tuesday) and after my days off next week.......I have about 8 straight midnights.....at least that way I can get some sort of sleep schedule.

I can dig it. When I got out of the Air Force, I worked in a juvenile detention center for 5 years as a detention officer and then a supervisor. I worked the graveyard shift, but there was always a staff meeting or training or some such nonsense going on that required us to be in during the day as well. At one point we were in 12 hour shifts due to manning. That was a knockabout of pure fun. You're right, it's kind of hard to be alert and patient with little to no sleep.
As mad as the gang bangers, drug dealers, car thieves and murderers locked up in the facility can make you - management and administration can usually top that.

I volunteer as a librarian at an Adult (mostly male) Correctional Facility. I know how you feel buddy about people getting under your skin. Like you, I love working with deliquents and you're right in saying that most of the time the "kids' at cool, but there's always that one guy who's mom didn't love him enough that ya just wanna pop in the head.
Stay cool. If you can take a time out. Go and sit in the bathroom for a minute and breath. Just do anything you can to collect yourself. They have 24 hrs a day to figure out how to make your life miserable.
The thing that keeps me going back are the guys who asks me, "Why are you here?" And I tell him, "Because I WANT to volunteer here." Some guys come out of nowhere and just say "Thank you. If it wasn't for you then I know we would have no access to books" and walk away.
I agree. Ask for a "reasonable accomodation" from HR--you can perform your job just as well as anyone else you just need to work certain hours/regular schedule so you CH's don't get triggered.

I love my job......don't get me wrong there. I wake up in the morning and actually look forward to going in each day.
Samantha, some of the kids ask me the same questions on a daily basis. When some of the kids in my unit are causing trouble or something, it doesn't take long for the kids to pick up on staff being frustrated. They will come up and ask me how and why I would want to work in a place like this. My answers are usually about the same. I tell them I know what it is like to be in their place and I understand how frustrated they become. I am just doing my part in trying to help and guide them down the right path before it gets too late.
