The picture is the Hagia Sofia, the renowned Byzantine basilica in Konstantinopel. It was built by the (East-) Roman Emperor Justinian between 532 and 537. When Sultan Mehmet conquered the city in 1453 (and renamed it Istanbul) he converted the church into a mosque. In 1934 Atatürk declared Hagia Sofia a national monument and converted it into a museum.
