Doctors Get Kickbacks from Drug Companies

Here's a snippet of the latest outrage from the pharmaceutical companies - offering piles of money to doctors if they agree to prescribe a particular brand of drugs. The check for $10,000 arrived in the mail unsolicited. The doctor who received it from the drug maker Schering-Plough said it was made out to him personally in exchange for an attached "consulting" agreement that required nothing other than his commitment to prescribe the company's medicines. Two other physicians said in separate interviews that they, too, received checks unbidden from Schering-Plough, one of the world's biggest drug companies. I've always been suspicious of that....why are they so quick to prescribe the expensive drugs first as apposed to the cheap drugs. for example lithium is very cheap, but topomax is expensive. Even my doc wanted me Topomax before she would try lithium.

Yup. Another shining example of how drug companies spend the "research" money they claim is necessary (between Las Vegas and Barbados meetings) to justify the price fixing and just plain greed aimed at those who can least afford it. Bastards: Love smilies, don't you? Charlie

The your insurance company tells you that you don't need what the doctor prescribed so they don't pay for the expensive stuff. And you're right Jayne about the Topamax being expensive. I think I've paid for my pharmacist's house on that one. At least I've been making his payments for him. But the lithium didn't work and had to spend the extra to have the blood levels run on it. But to take up for the docs -- they gotta make a living too. And with the insurance companies telling them how to practice medicine - guess they just have to have the income. Until we get the darn insurance companies out of medicine - I don't think there's any hope for us. Hugs BD

On the other hand, gin and tonic mix very well. *cheers!* By the way, there is a movement to socialize the medical system in the United States. If you think the system is open to corruption now... Phew! I lived in Japan for ten years and watched whole BAGS of medication being dispensed for the smallest case of the sniffles.

I'd admire him if he actually had a grip on truth and didn't try to present his outlandish views and hypotheses as fact.
