Amusing Nursing School Story

Hey all! I'm still around here and there even though I haven't posted as often and I'm not in chat much anymore!! Nursing school is just so busy it is rediculous!! But hey, I got 100 on a med calc exam this morning! I have a hilarious story to share about something that happened last night. I have been having real bad CH attacks again since Saturday (working on this!) and also just very high level pain from the migraine, so finally yesterday I decided I wanted to do an injection of DHE. Well, I suck at giving myself IM injections, and we just learned how to do them in school. So, I told my friend she could do the injection. She came over and I got everything all set up for her and showed her where to do the injection on my thigh. She started getting really nervous, and my roommate was in here too watching since she's learning. This all made me very nervous, and I was sweating bullets over it! So then, Jamie (my friend) is trying to do the injection, and she keeps getting close and then pulling her hand back. She finally does it, but the sound of the needle going through skin freaked her out, so she yanked the needle out of my leg. It was hilarious!!!!! She felt so bad. So, we put a bandaid on that one, and then she tried again after we all calmed down. She finally did it, and Diane and I reminded her of the steps of drawing back on the needle to check for blood and then injecting it in slowly. It was so funny! At one point, Jamie even asked me to move my arm away from where she was injecting because she was afraid I would grab her arm when she went to do it!! We were joking about the fact that I "only had 2 bandaids" after this event!! I told her it is a good thing that she practiced on someone like me first who is pretty tolerant than on some patient who would have ripped her head off!! hahaha Today in the lab we were practicing the injections on dummies, and I couldn't get the air out of my syringe this one time. So then Diane goes to flick it for me, and the whole needle ripped off with the vial and went flying across the room. OMG we were cracking up!!! If you guys could have a little video feed in on the stuff we do in lab, you would seriously crack up. It is really fun times!! Unfortunately, tomorrow I have 9 hours of lecture and a pharmacology exam, so I better go study!! Hugz, Carrie/Lizzie

LOL, great story Carrie. I shared it with my wife (ICU nurse) and she was laughing & remembering "stab lab" from when she was in nursing school. I'm sure that won't be the last funny story that you'll have before graduating. Later BruceD

LMAO Carrie. That brings back memories of when my mother was in nursing school. MANY moons ago. I got sick and needed an injection of something so she took the opportunity to practice on me. Luckily she got it right the first time, but both she and I were seriously nervous. When it was all over, she said it was just too nerve racking to have to give her own kid an injection. She never did it again. The stories she would tell. If people only knew half the things nurses talk about AND laugh at amongst themselves about their patients. Gator

Don't know if they still tell you this in nursing school (back in the early sixties they did), but get you a grapefruit and practice on that till you lose the nerves. One of the "funniest" things we did was on bedbaths. Practiced on each other. Some guy brought some homemade wine to school that morning and instead of eating lunch a few of us sampled his wine. After lunch we gave HIM a GREAT bedbath. For some reason he never brought us any more wine. Hugs BD

ROFL, Lizzie. In Army medic school, we practiced on each other, and yeah, giving the injection, drawing blood, or giving an IV is worse than being on the receiving end of it, when you're new at it. After a while, you just think, "Pain is the patient's problem." LOL
