UssCerberus Reporting: Captain's Log, Star date: 06-3-04. 4:30 pm All things in Jest...Just when ya thought you had stuff under control and were making progress, Life deals you a swift kick to the nutz. I got the fatal call from my Dislocated Workers Program counselor at 4:30CST, he regrettedly informed me that the graphic arts technology degree offered by the program has officially been dropped. . What this means is that I am now enrolled in College, with no way to pay for it which was the whole premise of me going back to school in the first place....they were gonna help pay...so much for re-schooling. I have to cancel my classes so I dont draw an F because I didn't attend. What am I going to do now you may ask, the answer is simple....I HAVE NO FUCKING IDEA!!!!! . No useable computer skills ( I was supposed to get that in school). Restaurant work, although viable, will kill me sooner than help aside from the money, my heart isnt in it anymore anyway and it wouldnt be fair to my employer to work at something I HATE! End recording: when it rains it pours... WAIT! THATS NOT RAIN!! Ramon

Dude, Open the phone book to "Unions" and call every single one of them, you dont have to know a trade to start in one. I know that jobs are tight now but you never know when you will hear some dude on the other end say "Wait, we are one guy short when can you be here"....I have done this many times and I can tell you that even a laboer in a union can pull down $12-15 an hour to start/ with all benifits (thats key!!!)...that boosts hourly up to $19 and you dont even know it. Also hit the phone book to anything that pertains to your drawing and call and ask if they are looking for an apprentice. You have a gift my friend, its just a matter of finding something to get you by till its your time to shine. .....................................................jonny

Ramon, I have been told when one door closes another one always opens... I am certain there is life after this...opportunity may not have presented itself yet, but, please, be open and ready for it. This is a blow, but YOU, sir, are a Clusterhead!! Remember, you an intelligent, capable soul..keep banging on doors....you will find the right one!!! Sending encouragement..... LIVE WELL AND PROSPER(is that correct?) Cathi

It sucks that they dropped the program Ramon BUT maybe this is your chance to do something with your art with or w/out that degree. Hell they can't teach what you have anyway. Like these folks have been saying put together a portfolio and market yourself. As good as you are there's gotta be a way to make a living with it. good luck bro, Jim

Ramon, You have a few things working for you that you need to exploit. First of all, your long term plan should be to make some money the way you like to spend your time and energy. Graphic Design, custom art, something along those lines I would imagine. So, make a real portfolio. You probably have most of the coolest stuff you’ve ever done, or at least some pictures of it. It wouldn’t hurt if you had professional photos of objects too. Put a real portfolio together, and an electronic version that can be used to shop your talents via the web as well as in person. You might even get some travel out of the gigs you get. People will pay for talent and you have to market yourself. You have the network already in place and you don’t know it. You have a huge network of friends here. I alone have over 500 contacts through this business contact network (my friends are hooked to their friends and all of them to theirs and so on. Even just making a contact through 1 of my own close contacts reaches over 600 hiring managers in all types of companies around the country. I’m just one guy here, and many here are your friend. Use us to shop your talents around and you’re sure to get some work my friend. Hell if just 20 people here signed up on the service I use, our network of people-to-people contacts for business like this would grow by another 500 people I bet. It’s an amazing network. Anyway, my point is you already have a lot of people here that can help get you work if you have a portfolio. While you’re getting that shopped around (looking for graphics design work), do something like Jonny said. It is a great way to learn a skill that will always be there if things go to crap in your main line of business. In fact, you could discover that there is an art to doing work the 'union' way. Seriously. As a hiring manager myself, I have often given the best and first chance to the one who is persistent and happens to just ‘be there’ when I’m nearing the point of hiring someone. Usually, it’s not that I really need someone that badly, it’s that I’m anticipating the departure (voluntary or not) of an employee, or maybe beefing up a shift. When someone shows the lack of common sense to stop asking, they show me they can stay on task and I like that. It doesn’t necessarily mean they will get the job, but I’ll put them first in line regardless of who’s on that application stack. Know what I mean? -Fu
